V6 Cologne swap on MK2, what do I need ?

Postby Greg L. » Wed Jul 11, 2018 9:36 am

Hello folks,

I will soon buy a MK2 Transit and plan to swap the engine. The best would be a 2.0 Pinto, but people now really want a HUGE amount of money for these in France and Belgium, so I'm thinking about swapping a V6 2.3 Cologne engine, and a M27 5-speed gearbox.

I can get a M27 5-speed gearbox and a crossmember from a MK3 and I still have a 4-speed gearbox from a MK1. Can I use the bellhousing from the MK1 gearbox on the M27 one, to fit the Cologne V6 engine?
I also have the V4 engine mounts. Can I use them with the V6 engine and does it fit in the MK2 without any modification?

Of course, the easiest way would be to find a cheap 2.0 Pinto but if I can get a complete V6 Cologne (with exhaust manifolds, distributor, ...) for even cheaper, it could worth a try.

Do you mean a MT75 gearbox but I’m not sure but is the bell houseing all one casting with the gearbox it’s 20 years since I’ve removed a MT75 gearbox

No, I mean the M27 gearbox from the MK3. It's basically the same than the 4-speed M26 with a 5th gear.
M26/M27 gearboxes have a separate bellhousing.

never heard of an m27 gearbox, whichever one you use on a cologne v6, make sure when the bellhousing is bolted to the gearbox that the input shaft protrudes past the line of the front of the bellhousing or it wont locate in the back of the crank in the spigot bush, and you will end up with serious clutch judder, ask me how I know

Basically, it's the 5-speed gearbox that is found on MK3 only and looks like a M26 gearbox.
I'd be surprised you don't have this one in the UK.

I suspect that we would recognise the M27 box but know it by a different name...

If you are going for a 2.3, then why not go for a 2.8 or 2.9 ? The bellhousing bolt pattern is the same. But the bigger V6s in UK are now asking for silly money, so maybe it is the same in France.

Sure, but 2.6, 2.8 and 2.9 prices are also insane here. 2.3 are easier to find, and way cheaper.
For my MK2, I just need an engine that doesn't drink too much and à 5-speed gearbox.

I have had a further look and there is a reference to M27 being also named type N which is the same as what we call the type 9. The type 9 has a similar "brother" which is 4 speed so it would seem to make sense.

If M27 = type 9 then the selector rod moves out of a hole in the front face of the gearbox into a hole in the bellhousing which is central and above the 2 top mounting bolt holes. The transit type of this gear box has a side mounted gear change with a gear stick which mounts from below.

So if it is a type 9, I would first be very careful of the layshaft needle bearings which can wear badly and cause the gearbox to fail. Using the V4 mountings will depend on where the gearstick comes through the floor and then the length of the bellhousing. As Browny says, the input shaft of the gearbox needs to be matched to the bellhousing length to ensure the spigot bearing locates correctly.

Again on the basis that it is a type 9, then you will need to fabricate a crossmember or use a type 9 crossmember from a mk3 Transit

if its a type 9 you need to get a v6 one as the input shaft is longer, type 9 from a 4 cylinder is no good.
