MK1 LWB Twin wheeler : change the diff or the axle ?

Postby Greg L. » Sun Oct 07, 2018 8:14 am

Hello,

I have a MK1 LWB twin wheeler with 5.86 ratio (maybe even more) and it's not suitable for what I want to do with this van.

I wish I could go for a 4.11 diff. I've thought about several options and I have a lot of questions :
1. Swap the whole rear axle from a single wheeler LWB MK1 or MK2, but it appear they have Timken rear axles. Have single wheeler Salisbury rear axles ever been fitted on LWB MK1/2 Transits ?
2. Find another diff for my rear axle, but can't tell which is the lowest one I can get and if I can find it easyly
3. Swap the internals from a Timken rear axle. Is it possible ?
4. Swap a rear axle from a later RWD Transit. I guess it must be as complicated than fitting a Timken rear axle and implies a lot of work.

Can anybody help me ?

i have converted my mk1 twin wheeler using a mk4/5 5 stud single rear wheel axle with a set of weller wheels it fits inside the rear arches
i had to weld on new spring and shocker mounts to the axle to make it fit

i also changed the front to mk2 5 stud disk brake hubs - they are a straight swap

Thanks Luke ! Good news about the front hubs.

So, I worked on my MK2 FT80 van today and surprisingly, it has a Salisbury / G-Type rear axle. So I guess I can swap the diff internals between my MK1 twin wheeler and my MK2. Can anyone confirm this ?

Fitted a Mk5 Axle to mine, 4.63FDR - Still a bit too high in my opinion.

What did you have to do to make it fit ?

I think I have one 4.63 CWP for a twin wheel axle somewhere.

Had to move the spring saddles in a bit. Cut them off and re welded and used a jig from my Mk2 axle to make sure all was ok. Bolt in job after that
