modifying steering column

Im in the middle of fitting a 2.5 di and RHD conversion on my mk1 ,im fitting the suspension from a mk5,can anyone tell me how to modify the mk1 column,cheers

Use the column from the Mk5, you will need to cut and shut that with u/j’s to fit onto the rack

Would a A series fit they had a steering column with ujs not a full shaft from box to steering wheel

Do you not mean use the mk1 column?

The Mk1 column is part of the steering box, you could cut off the bottom and make a hybrid shaft but fixing the U/Js would be tricky as there would be no splines on the column.

if i use the mk5 column why would i need to alter it as im fitting mk5 subframe,

like muttley says mk5 column is best all you need to do is cut off the part which bolts to the bulkhead and make another way of securing the lower end other than that it is a perfect fit
with mine i have used the top end casing of the mk1 to retain the indicators and cowl but you dont need to do that

I fitted a Mk3 power steering box into my Mk2. I wanted to keep the Mk2 switches, column surround and original ignition switch. I cut down the outer tube of the Mk2 column, and fitted the bearing at the lower end from a mk5 column. I then fitted the Mk5 steering shaft, I needed to weld the bush on for the steering lock mechanism, but very straightforward. Also needed a lower support bracket for the column, which I cut off the Mk5 column.
A bit of work, but reasonably straightforward, and looks factory!
