MK 1 FORD TRANSIT 5 SPEED BOX OPTIONS

Postby fastlane » Fri May 24, 2019 8:13 pm

Good evening,
i hope you can help in my request. i own a 1971 ford transit camper i recently have had my 1.5 V4 engine taken out and replaced with a 2 litre V4 ( 1969 ish) also a 4 speed box fitted. i have taken the van for a drive today and the van really needs a 5 speed box. it goes well through the gears but once it gets to 4th gear it is revving high as it needs that 5th gear to allow it to cruise and will sound quieter and run more efficient rather than constantly revving high in 4th.

my question is can anybody recommend what 5 speed box would fit straight on the bell housing from another vehicle. i was thinking maybe Capri??

any advice would be much appreciated

also i have a 1.5 V4 engine and gear box for sale if anybody could put this to good use. the engine and gearbox were both working ok

have a nice weekend

Daniel

you can fit the type 9 box with a few mods and a transit linkage but they are rare

what ratio back axle have you got?

See this thread regarding fitting the Mt75 five speed gearbox from the Mk3/4/5 Di Transits to the Essex V4/6 engines;
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=105677

Assembly/fitting instructions here;
viewtopic.php?f=31&t=140973

Using the Mt75 in a V4 Mk1 will give you an 'overdrive' 5th gear together with a low cost robust gearbox.
Adapter plates and the necessary installation hardware are available as a kit from ourselves, either PM us or use the hyperlink in our signature below for more information.

Nice looking van by the way,

I have a couple of Transit type 9 boxes with either Pinto or diesel bell housing. Your easiest option is 4 speed with overdrive as they are available with V4 bellhousing.

They were fitted to MK1 MK2 & MK3 Transits, it called a Laycock overdrive & its fitted to the heavy duty type F gearbox. I can get you picture of one later this week. I have fitted one to my MK1.
