Under bonnet temperature.Starter getting hot.

After a long run in my V4 although it doesnt boil or seem to overheat the starter is hot enough to turn a lot slower when trying to restart.
The body of the starter is very hot. (It is disengaging properly)
Im assuming this is heat soak from the engine,odd that Ive not noticed it before.
I was thinking of making a heat shield as I assume the heat from the exhaust is responsible for some of it.

I cant think of anything Ive done that should make any difference,any ideas?

I had that on my escort back in the 90s I fixed it by replacing the starter.
But let us know if you have a go at the heat shield and it works

If it is disengaging then it may be the starter solenoid for the slow starting.

As the contacts get older and become a bit dirty and/or pitted the resistance across the contacts increases, very small but enough. Then resistance increases with temperature ie heat from the engine so creating the starting slower when hot.

The solenoids can sometimes be dismantled and contacts cleaned but may need de-soldering on a couple of connections to do so. Also you may be able to get a replacement solenoid.

May be worth a look if you are getting the starter off.

they do get very hot! As you say, from radiated heat under the exhaust manifold. A heat shield will help a bit. If you can be bothered, remove the starter, connect to a battery with some jumper leads, pulse it a few times while putting a few drops of engine oil in each end, the bushes will thank you for it!
