Kingpins thrustwashers and shims

Postby Ellwood » Sun Jun 23, 2019 7:04 pm

Hi, the mot guy made me buy some new kingpins. Ive got one side to bits, and tomorrow will put her together. But all those shims... Do i just grease the thrust bearings, or do i put shims in between them? If i need extra shims to take up any slack, do i put in bottom or top of the whole assembly?

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4578 And yes grease every thing as you put it together and just before you knock the cotter pin in fully home use your grease gun and make sure the grease is going through the bearings.as for shimming it up get it as tight as you can make sure the axle face and stub face are clean and flat

The worst thing is that most modern MOT testers don't understand that a kingpin usually has a little play in it, (unless it's brand new), which looks a lot worse at the outside of the wheel. Modern ball joints don't have that play until they're worn out!
When I had vans with kingpins, I used to load the grease gun with the thickest grease I could find, and pump it in immediately before it went into the MOT station, and that was usually sufficient to get the pass :P :D

On psvs and Hgv s for mot all the limits for kingpins are in the testers manual the bigger the wheel on them the bigger movement you are allowed in the bush’s on a lot of them you could remove the bush’s completely and they would still not exceed the limits most failures on kingpins is on the lift in them if there’s any doubt the tester will have a gauge to check the gap between the stub and the axle beam that’s why when you fit kingpins you shim them up as tight as possible as Al as pointed out not many car and van testers will have seen a kingpin let alone no the limits if in doubt get them to get the manual out
