Mk2 engine swap.

Postby Frollo » Mon Sep 30, 2019 1:30 pm

Hey guys! I am new to this forum, so please inform me of the customs if I am over the line.

I recently bought an mk2 transit with a 2.4 Diesel engine in it. The power-to-fuel ratio in this car scares me, and I am fairly sure that I'm going to look for other options as for the engine.

Question is: What is the best/most cost-efficient engine swap that I should look for? I am very open-minded but on a budget.

I appreciate any answer because I am very lost. hehe. I will read and reply to everything. If you want pictures of the car, I will gladly share.

With you saying 2.4 I think you may have the York engine you could fit a 2.5 di Banana engine out of a mk5 witch is basically very similar to yours and will be a simple fit or go for 2.5 di turbo and change the Lucas epic pump for the Bosch’s manual pump conversion their are threads on the form about this pump set up as for a gearbox the 4 speed with overdrive will be a simple fit if you were going to fit a 5 speed MT75 or the earlier mk3 box I think you will have to modify the gear stick location.
I fitted a mk3 overdrive box into a mk2 I had to have the propshaft modified and as I didn’t have the rear gearbox mounting x member I had to cut the centre out of the 4 speed x member and lower it and re weld to clear the o/d unit a very easy job

Thank you for the fast reply!

I want to look further into this matter, could you please provide a link for this thread? I am not sure how to navigate this page properly yet.

unless your doing hundreds of miles a week leave it exactly how it is,,, fuel economy is great if your clocking 30,000 miles a year

I am thinking of leaving the 2.4D york in there, but the 4-speed gearbox is just too slow for highway speeds where I live. Is there any other gearbox that would fit my engine?

Sidenote: The radiator fan seems to be very loose, and the fan itself is missing a few blades. Any solution for that? Its squeaking heavily on startup.

Thanks a lot! I will look further into the type 9 5-speed box.

Is there any place that trades these? And is there any websites I can go to for spare parts (fan bearing).

I was told by BGH who rebuilt my type 9, (they do a lot of type 9 boxes) that it does not like prolonged running at low revs. Something to do with oil circulation not good at low revs and therefore they would suggest to avoid putting a diesel with a type 9.

So that would point more to an overdrive box.
