New fuel E10

Postby Peet » Fri Oct 04, 2019 9:06 pm

Hi,

I have a question about the " new" e10 fuel (10% bio ethananol). Owning a transit mk2 2.0 fuel engine. Having no problems with the e5 fuel, but wondering if the the engine will be damaged
driving it with the e10 fuel.

Kind regards,

Peter

Here in Australia, it’s not so much the engine that has issues with an ethanol blend.

It’s the fuel system that can have issues, due to the alcohol absorbing moisture/ water, and if the vehicle is not used regularly the ethanol can separate from the petrol component, so storing it in jerry cans and the like isn’t the best.

Some rubber seals and hoses don’t like the ethanol as the alcohol has a drying effect, causing leaks and the like.

But if your van is going well on E5 the 5% increase shouldn’t have much of an effect.

Ethanol as a fuel will cope better with higher compression than standard fuel, it had a cooling/quenching effect on the hot spots in combustion chambers and suffers detonation less.

Some change the fuel system and tune high performance/ hp engines for E85 for this reason.
