Probs with relay on Electric fuel pump

Postby greek » Sun Apr 12, 2020 4:32 pm

Any leccies on here give some advice, I have a mk1 transit which when i purchased 11yr ago was fitted with electric fuel pump. Recently had engine out & reconned but when went to fire it up pump not working, it has a relay & fuse fitted in line thought it might have been relay so changed it still the same you can hear the pump sort of trying to work on 1st position of the key but does,nt quite get itself going. My question is I have bypassed the relay & fuse to work off the ignition as normal & it works fine delivering fuel when needed & stopping when not, could I damage pump just leaving like this. If someone answers this bear in mind I know sweet F A about electrics, do most other things but complete numpty on electrics.

Bypassing a fuse puts the wiring and pump at risk of overload and worst case fire under short circuit fault conditions. Relay is basically just an electric switch, it’s there to do a job, so again I’d be wary of bypassing
