I’ve never removed the top spring just expanded the shoes on the adjustment with the brake pipe off push the pistons back in to give I bit more wiggle room.

Hi Ralph9.
It s a 77 autohome. But when I look for 77 cylinders I get Options that do not look the same.

Here are some photos of my cylinders

I’ve seen a set that look right but they are advertised as Mk2.
I’m also believing the stories that the parts available were often fit. Need to fit shoes obviously or I could replace all.
Any help is appreciated.
Henry

I had it happen that the with a mk1 the cylinders came out for a mk2 that was five years newer then the mk1.if you get cylinders with the right pistons but the dowel in the mounting face is in the wrong position I have used a pin file to slot the hole so it will fit . And looking at the photos you may have to remove the top spring every one I did back in the day hod the flat edge pistons .

Thanks Dumper
I’m thinking these have the right look. I’ll see if I can get more specs from the outlet and hope you have some info for me Ralph9.

Try and get some with the long bleed nipples or replace the short ones with the long type makes bleeding much easer.

Hi peeps. With some effort And all your help I was able to change the two rear brake cylinders- it was satisfying BUT I have two remaining issues:
1 - a very minimal fluid leak. 2 days to build up a drip. No pressure applied yet though
2- the drums do NOT go back on. I’m assuming that the minimum cylinder distance is pushing the shoes out too much (say 0.25mm).

So here’s some questions.
On point 1 (the leak)- shall I apply some sealant (Which one) to tube flared copper tube and nut or repeat tighten.
On point 2 The shoes over extended what do I do? Can my self adjusting shoes be reduced? Or have I missed a way to adjust the cylinder or will I have to grind the slot more into the cylinder pistons? Or grind the brake shoe?

All help always appreciated- I couldn’t have got this far without you.

Henry

I assume the leak is from the brake pipe fitting to the cylinder? you shouldn't need any sealant it might just need nipping up.

Get a screwdriver and lever the serated tooth self adjusting locking arm (its fitted against the handbrake cable lever) against it's spring pressure this will allow the shoes to move inwards and the drum to go on.

That’s a bit of good news Chug. I did see those ratchets in the Haynes but didn’t want to touch and f up.
They are in the hidden side of the shoe so not easy to see which bit to lever. Can you point to it on this pic?? I can take a better one if you prefer.

Cannot see from the pics but just look for serrated teeth gadget attached to the handbrake arm and move it with a flat screwdriver, you'll soon get the idea.

Ok So The ratchets loosened easily and the brakes pulled in. (Thanks Chug)

But still no brakes :!:

I then moved onto bleeding the back brakes. Seemed to all go ok. Bubbles in fluid disappeared and foot pedal pushed clean fluid through- although very little- not squirting by any means.

So figured I was ready I replaced the drums and checked the brakes- no engagement.
Hand brake engages well. So off with drums and viewed the cylinders as my boy pumped the brake. No movement. So I topped the reservoir (not much) and noted as the brake pedal is pushed bubbles were appearing in the reservoir.

As I have the servo I also tried breaking with the engine running. In this case the pedal is pushed with no resistance at all.

So somethings wrong?

Could it be the new cylinders? Are they full of fluid (they bled ok).
Do I need to reset the shoe ratchets?
Does the bubbling in the the reservoir Indicate another problem (brakes worked fine under old cyinders).
