All RWD,the first FWD Transit was a Mk6, there were a few MK2 about with twin SLD, but as said, very rare, even a single SLD wasn't the norm :)

We had a fleet of 40 mk2s and over the the time they where available we must have had a100 plus we only had 3 with a side door two came from dealer stock and one our service van was a special order with a lift up tail gate and it was a long wait for delivery.so definitely a rare van. Back then the fleet manager would just ring round local dealers ask what was in stock and buy it it was the same with a company car they got what they had in stock.

An English van with twin side doors is rare, ex German fire van with twin side doors & tailgate not so rare now, there is an English van with right side door no left door, but that was because they made a cock up at the factory lol

Thanks both. Clears that up.

So my plan is I want a reasonably good condition mk2 swb rolling chassis. I would like regular front doors and also I will fit 2 side doors.

I want the flat metal original fronted 1 as I don't like the newer plastic front with the plastic lights /indicators. :( I've read that it is a minor upgrade /downgrade of I did get 1.

I'd love a 1977 van as that's my birth year, but I've read that mk 1 was until 78 :(

Anyway let me know when you find 1 k 8)

Interesting reading the comments about the side loading doors. NZ had Transit assembly in Seaview, Lower Hutt from CKD kits until 1981. All of the Mk2's I have ever seen here had a LH side loading door only. No RH side loading doors, and no vans WITHOUT SLD's either! Very few options too, all were 2.0 OHC,(no diesel option) all had barn rear doors, option of manual or auto,(although auto is rare) white was by far the most popular colour, and I think they were all the "100" spec, they didn't even offer the LWB version on the van. Cab and chassis was the only other Mk2 offering, in SWB or LWB.

If they were CKD a lwb takes up more room shipping possible, i went to Portugal 10 years ago a mk2 i spotted was a 120 york diesel right side door with windup windows both sides and a fold out bench & tailgate, france also have sliding side doors, and often sliding drivers door

I've had a couple of ex RAC Mk2s, they came with a sliding drivers door, rear tailagte and 1 hinged side door on the N/S, wierd combo, never seen one with twin sliding Fr doors though :? i know the combi had a side door as standard but i think anything other than the basic 4 doors was an SVO option so you had to order it ? i seem to remember that's what the brochure said ? can't check cos photobucket ate all my files LOL

:(
It's hard to find them for sale because most of the ads that pop up are out of date and they're sold already. I would expect to be able to get a European side door and panel from a scrapper and I can cut and weld it in. I expect that parts will be a struggle so I'll need to be lucky or fab my own

Takes a lot to care for older parts, some guy just chopped a full mk2 body up :( I'd have had it but no log book or tags I don't think.

So old parts are expensive as they're rare, new parts are expensive because they are new and in demand.
Mk6 and mk7 parts are plenty and cheap for us tramps at the moment.

Although some ebay sellers don't seem to check the price of what is trending. :?
