2.5di pre banana engine

Postby mk2 transit crew » Sun Nov 08, 2020 9:17 pm

Hi all,

i have been wanting a transit mk2 to use for work to replace my more modern van. i have just bought recently a 1982 mk2 lhd transit with a mk3 2.5di engine. the vehicle has sat for probably 15yrs plus. i have been looking through this forum and found loads of useful information. im currently stripping the vehicle so it can be fully restored. when it was delivered the engine run but regularly stalled wouldn't rev properly etc. i have run it straight from a jerry can and found issues such as the diesel stop solenoid decided to break and sieze open so it wouldn't shut off. the solenoid part was disintegrating and after it was removed the running got worse till it eventually stopped starting at all. i thought the disintegrating parts had got further into the pump so thought a recon pump might be worthwhile. since fitting a new pump and checking timing, bleeding etc it will not run still. I'm now thinking it might be a compression issue? anyone know what the chances are it could be compression? any help would be appreciated?

What pump, lucas or Bosch?

Both pumps can be a fecker to bleed, Have you got fuel to the injectors?

Hi All,

its a lucas cav. 100 percent timed correctly using the pegs. i have fuel to the injectors as i have checked multiple times, also the return no longer has air in it as im using clear pipe to check.

engine smokes a bit from the exhaust when cranking and i finally gave in and used easy start. it run but will only continue on full throttle. smokes more than your could ever believe.

that's what is leading me to think it could be compression. im so confident i have the pump bled through and timed, i wouldn't have thought the injectors would be at fault? even if they are i cant get them out as they are well stuck in. hence why im wondering if low compression could be the issue?

if i can't get it running then i will be looking at a full rebuild. i need 100 percent reliability as it will be used daily once put back together. anyone know of someone who could rebuild the engine?

thanks for the help and replies so far.

Have you bleed it at the injectors by slackening main pipes off and turning it over on the key till the fuel is coming out of all 4 and has yours a lift pump and is it ok to check it remove it from the block and operate it by hand .

no it doesn't have a lift pump, i have already done the injector cracking quite a few times whilst turning over and i get clear squirts of diesel when slightly cracked open whereas before i used to get bubbles when slightly cracked. although i had heard that it could be bled by starting with easy start by holding the throttle wide open although i only found that out after actually doing it and i had it started on easy start long enough that i would have thought it would have bled through.

engines now removed so i might give it one last go, otherwise im looking for a rebuild as no doubt it probably needs it anyway. just would have been nice to get it going better before fully stripping least of all so i could have resolved the fault.
