part required for my mk1

Postby shepped0 » Fri Dec 18, 2020 2:50 pm

Hi All

Hoping for some help.
My mk1 panel van is in need of a part which i am struggling to find.
On the hand brake there is a cable that is attached to a rod (which goes through chassis) then attached to another cable and via a horseshoe mechanism pulls both rear brakes . The cable is the part i am after as it has seize and can be properly activated. Any help greatly appreciated

Is it a SWB or LWB van ?

The parts manual just calls it the parking brake cable. There are 2 versions of different lengths depending on SWB or LWB. So best to remove it and measure as actually there have been instances of the wrong cable being fitted and the rod length adjusted to fit.

There are cables of each length listed on ebay.

Pagid is just a manufacturer of brake components so may have produced them in the past but I suspect would no longer do so.

These are the Ford part numbers for the Mk1

SWB - Finis 1503957 Part number 69VB 2A604 AA

LWB - Finis 1503958 Part Number 69VB 2A604 BA

What I was looking at on ebay were in fact Mk2 handbrake cables and having double checked, it appears that they are different lengths from the Mk1 versions. Sorry about that. But if you search Mk2 Handbrake cables on ebay then they will come up.

The correct ones are available but pricey from Motomobil in Germany. But I would be seriously tempted to measure up the existing one and then look at the Mk2 cables to see if they would work with particular attention to the end fittings. And it looks like the SWB cable is longer than the LWB one which seems backwards but there will be Ford logic somewhere in that arrangement.

Thanks Guys...Ford dont make it simple do they
It is in with a garage at the moment i havent got the time to play around with it...so i will try and get them to measure up first. Failing that i may get it home and over the Christmas break have a look myself especially if you think the ends may be different which will cause a big problem
You say the ones on Ebay are mk2's but not likely to fit......I was going to go on your part numbers only but are you saying the mk2 have a chance of fitting?
I have spoken with a couple of guys who specialize in type of things and even for them its not clear cut

It shouldn't be a cable but an adjustable rod from the pivot at the bottom of the lever to the horse shoe, the only ones that used a short cable were very early German vans. I should have a good used rod as im dismantling a MK1 at the moment.

Unfortunately it is just one of those things that unless someone tries then it is difficult to tell whether the Mk2 cable will work. Personally I would guess that it would and with the cost difference, for myself I would give it a try. But there might be a problem.

These diagrams are taken from the Mk2 Ford workshop manual in case it helps to compare the systems.

Luke, an interesting comment on the Mk3. Have you made any comparisons yourself ?
