missing timing belt tensoining spring?

Postby JohnKarpenter » Thu Jan 21, 2021 4:31 pm

Hi,

Iam changing the timing belt on my '79 transit mk2 1.6 but am missing a spring on the tensioning to put the timing belt under tension. Try to order one but all the replacement tension rolls sets come without a spring.

There wasnt a spring on the previous timing belt but looking a the haynes manuel there should be one.

Does any one now what to do? How should i put tension on the timing belt?

Thanks

Having done timing belts in the past that are adjusted by rotating a water pump to tension them the rule of thumb was to tighten the belt so that you could twist the belt on its longest run between pulleys to 45 degrees that was on vw and Astra vans of the 80s & 90s .you can get a gauge to set cam belts but with the pinto engine I’d tension it with a screw driver till the belt will twist to 45 degrees but I have fitted a lot of belts in the past.
