New Battery required

Postby shepped0 » Wed Feb 03, 2021 2:39 pm

Hi All
Looking for advice again on what recommendations for a suitable battery for a mk1, 2 litre, 1969 battery would be.
Current battery has given up the ghost i think due to not being used.
Want to buy a quality one like Bosch etc with enough cca amps and a suitable size. Van gets little use.
Van has the original battery tray in it however the old battery seems a little lost so maybe a bigger version ?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated

No sorry mate I’d just go online and see what is availability I don’t know if Euro car parts list batteries for mk1&2 the reason I say fit a diesel battery is when we ran the York engine in them and the battery was testing ok but not starting them we would replace them and fit the old battery onto the petrol engine vans and have no problem with it on them .

I use an 075 type battery on each of a number of vehicles so that I can swap them around different vehicles and keep them charged. Although maybe not good enough for diesels.

Also one of the battery isolator clamps with the knurled wheel on top makes it easy to isolate the battery if you are not going to use it for a while. It seems odd since everything is switched off but it seems to help keep the charge in the battery. That way I have got a couple of batteries dating from 2012 that are still working (so far).

It would be an idea to measure the old battery, (length x width x height), and see if a longer battery will fit on the tray.
You also need to check which way round the posts are, (positive on left? or right?) unless the leads are long enough to fit either way around.
I seem to remember that battery posts on older Fords were tag (bolt through) connectors, whereas most modern batteries have round tapered posts, but you can buy post adaptors to use these newer batteries on the older vehicles, without changing the leads.

If the correct battery is the 075 (as above) which is 242 x 175 x 175, you may be able to fit a longer battery such as the Varta E38 which is 278 x 175 x 175, which has much greater cranking power, but you still need to check which side the positive terminal is on:-

Post adaptors if needed:-

Hope this helps :)

you've got to keep charging the battery up with a battery charger to keep it in good condition

Never had to do that even when vehicles had a Dynamo and not getting a good run in winter if you need to put a changer on a battery it’s on it’s way out or you have left something on.
