Afternoon everyone,I have a diff problem, my ‘78 H front loader is painfully noisy and is leaking badly from the pinion oil seal,I have a new seal but can’t get the crush tube which is also needed to do the job...on top of that it is notchy when rotated and seems to lift and move at the pinion flange....this can’t be usual!.so I have located a replacement diff potentially...it is a mk3 1988 diff from a 2.5D it says it’s 9-41 but I don’t know what that means!. Can anybody tell me if the mk3 diff will fit in my axle please!. Thanks

9-41 is the ratio which is 4.55, I think the MK3 uses a different thickness half shaft, it sounds like yours needs a new pinion bearing?

The local Ford parts department had a clear out back in 89 and I got a mk 1 diff unit for my mk1 and when I scraped it I kept the diff not sure of exact ratio 4.6 to 1 ish I later fitted it to my 86 mk3 so it will fit in the axle but as for the half shafts fitting I am not sure as I fitted a Ford supplied ZF lsd for a mk3 so the half shaft splines would be right . Back then I have fitted mk 1 diffs into mk 2s but would always fit the half shafts and diff from one axle together.so all I can say for sure is the diff will bolt into the axle tube .

A mk2 and mk3 diff are interchangeable. Mk4/5 use different halfshaft splines

Thanks so much for your replies. My current diff is sounding beyond new bearings! I’ve been told I need to replace the crush washer which lies betwix the pinion bearings should I decide to have it apart,I’m having trouble finding one,the English axels on the early escorts have a similar spacer but I don’t think it’s going to fit and these are available, one chap is selling a’kit’ for £51 paper gasket, oil seal and spacer,it looks similar but he doesn’t post to Portugal post brexit and I already have an oil seal...bit expensive for a crush tube...if anybody has any?? I am interested!!;)).so I think the Portuguese breaker who has the diff for sale has got the arse with me as he is declining to measure the bolt centres or send me photos...again,thanks for your replies, 8)

Hmmm, half shafts, something else to consider!.so Ford changed the splines on the mk3? That would put the cat in the bag...I’m not sure I can pull off a diff rebuild in my air B and B with just the tools I bought over on my m/c!

I haven't got a mk2 personally so haven't put a mk3 diff in one... but I have sold various mk3 Limited Slip diffs (or centres) to go in mk2s and they have been confirmed (by most) as fitting, and never had a complaint :D

Alas my supply of those has now dried up...
