MK4 wheels on MK2 axle?

Postby LemonV8 » Mon Mar 29, 2021 4:53 pm

Hi all,

Are there tips to use MK4 wheels on a MK2 axle? The axle is not on a Transit but Citroën and I would like larger wheels 15 or 16"
I have a set of 16" now to test. Problems are obviouslythe hub bolts and the centering of the rim.
The hub bolts I could countersunkt or use a spacer. But can I use centering rings on the MK2 hubs directly?

If it’s 5 stud hubs you are using I fitted mk1/2 weller wheels to my mk3 swb both are cone wheel nuts to used centre the wheel and the same pcd I think the mk4 is on cone nuts as well and not spigot nuts that rely on the centre of the hub to centre the wheel as long as you have the correct thread for nuts and studs it would be ok .
On wheels with cone nuts they centralises the wheel and clamp it to the hub .
On spigot nuts with washers the hub centralise the wheel and all he nuts do is clamp it to the hub.

Do you have 5 stud or 6 stud wheels?

5 stud:
Wheels up to 2000 will be a direct fit
2001-2014 have the same PCD but rely on having a hub to center on - you won't have this so they arn't really safe to use
2014 onwards use tapered wheel nuts again so are OK (but you will have to use wheel nuts for alloy wheels)

The other option is Land Rover Defender / Discovery 1 steel wheels - these have a different stud pattern (5x165mm) but can be redrilled to suit the transit (5x160mm) and fitted using tapered wheel nuts.

6 stud - No, anything after 1991 uses a different stud pattern and requires the spigot on the hub you don't have.

Hope that makes sense?

Alternatively you could look at getting the hubs themselves redrilled by an engineering shop to take a different stud pattern of your choice?

Yes ok as long as you use correct threads on studs and nuts.
