Read hub swb mk2

Postby buxvan » Sun Apr 11, 2021 9:35 pm

You will probably laugh at me but, I thought my rear wheel cylinder was weeping as I had wetness on the bottom of the brake drum. Turned out it was the hub seal leaking out diff oil. Have bought a new hub seal & hub but as my but had been butchered (not by me) old but had 4 spaces where a special socket was needed to tighten it up. New one has about 12 sides like a socket. In the manual it says there should be a locking washer. There wasn't one fitted. Do I need one?
Now the stupid bit.
I take it that the diff oil lubricates the wheel bearings??
Thanks in advance

You should have 2 nuts (collars) with a lock washer in between. Nip up the inner one so as to just remove end float, put on the washer and bend a tab or 2 inwards to lock it. Then tighten the outer one up and lock that as well. Yes, splash from the diff lubricates the bearings.

This is the knackered hub nut & a Haynes picture of my hub. Only one nut . New nut looks different. Will the lock washer still work?
Do you bend one of the tabs or is it like a gripping star washer?
Thanks again.

The locking collar should have six notches in it, the tabs on the washer lock it and the spacer collar behind it. That doesn't look like the right nut to me.

No thats a mk4/5 nut which you do up and leave alone - no peening required as its nyloc :D

Its probably a different thread, but if not it would be functional on an earlier axle (albeit not correct)
