Adding a lighter

Postby wardy-uk » Thu Oct 18, 2007 7:22 pm

I want to add a lighter socket to my Mk 1 transit to plug my sat nav in. Where should I be trying to look to wire this in at?

I would tap directly into the main power feed to ignition or take power from fuse box.

yeah - what you need to do is pick up a switched 12v feed from somewhere - i'll have a look on a wiring diagram to see what wire to pick but basically just solder a wire to that going via a fuse to the + terminal on the fag lighter socket and connect the - side to an earth point on the van :D

You can also search for that "search-light-pens"..
I can't explain better, :? but I've a "pen" with a sharp metal point, a light inside and a connection for ground on the back.

-It's great, because after connecting the back wire it to the earth (some metal point of the van...), all you have to do is to stick the sharp point it on every wire that you think may suit your needs, until you find what you need.

And it's normally way cheaper then a regular "meter"..

Let us know how you get on Wardy-uk.

I will need to do this soon, but think I'll just have a 12v power outlet socket (ie: a cigarette lighter without the lighter bit, just a rubber bung over the top). Need it for TomTom and iPod charger and stuff like that. Will try to hide it under the dash / in the glovebox somewhere.

I am a complete novice when it comes to vehicle electrics, so hope this is fairly simple.

I'll have to study the wiring diagrams in the old Haynes manual before thinking about cutting any wires... or I might just leave it to somebody who knows what they're doing!

I don't want mine for a lighter iler just for my sat nav. I have been thinking of where I can hide it away and the glove box seems like a grate idear.

Ill take some pictures and put them on here when I do it

I think ill just buy that one from the shop then Luke save waiting foe delivery :)
