The knurled nut screws off at the bottom of the bowl, don't over tighten it or you can pop the glass.

We used to throw them away back before the anti waxing additives where added to diesel used to be a common brake down in winter on anything that had a sediment bowl and yes be careful common for the bowls to crack if over tightened.
