Fitting electronic ignition (ballast resister)

Postby NogE » Mon Aug 23, 2021 6:10 pm

I know when fitting electronic to cortinas I used to remove the ballast resister wire and replace it with a 12volt cable....
So now fitting electronic ignition to the mk1..there's no ballast ceramic resister unit ,so is there a resister wire I need to bypass?....anyone help hear..cheers

Check the feed to see if it's 12v or 9v.

Mk1's did not have a resistor wire, only the ceramic ballast. Make sure the coil you fit is correct for the electronic ignition system, as there are many different types!

Thanks chaps..
Conrad,... Acuspark provide their coil with the kit. So is correct one....
But I donot hv a ceramic ballast resister...so I woukd hv to assume it's a straight 12volt feed ...

Not transit but mk1 escort used to have a pink ballast wire when they burnt out we used to use a Cortina one that was on the outside of the loom they had two feeds to the coil off the ignition switch the run feed was through the ballast and the starting lead was 12 v relying on the volts dropping to 9 v when the starter was turning if I remember correctly.

yes correct, that is a straight +12v feed. There will also be a ballast bypass wire which runs from the starter solenoid to the coil +, you can leave this wire disconnected as you are feeding 12v to the coil now.

Unless you've had the van from new then previous owner may have rewired so a multimeter will tell what voltage it gets on cranking and ign on.
