Hi there I,v just bought a 1984 HYMERMOBIL based on a mk2 transit (left hand drive) she as what should be a 2.332 deisel engine in her but cannot be sure ,she start first turn of key runs well now I've changed the black sludge out of the place were the oil should have been and put new air and oil filters in her ,the problem is the smoke ,shes an old girl but on cold start ups and untill she gets about 5 miles on her she a pipe smoker .IS THIS NORMAL
My consern is for the MOT (due April 2008) I also would like to no what engine would fit in her and would I have to change back axle and prop shaft REGARDS JIM. :?:

Of it's a 2.3 it sounds like a York, or maybe a perkins (but I am not sure about the perky). A good replacement would be 2.5 Di, it would be an easy swap, and as you already have a diesel engine (presuming you are getting enough speed out of her) no need to change the back axle.

Do you think the van was originally diesel or a conversion from petrol? The dead giveaway is the heater controls, the factory diesel has three sliders, and the petrol has two.

Hi there Fred the heater as two sliders but I will look at the ID plate in the engine compartment for what engine it should have had fittered .The DI engine sounds good but I have a gear box with an over drive I was thinking of fitting its the connection off the gear box to the prop that concerns me I think it I must have to fit another type of prop .
Do you no the Mot rules on exhaust the Hymer smokes when warm but not too much and when I think about it she does not like hills very much but the gross weight is 2810KG plus all the trankelments we carry in her so I don't expected too much 60mph and 70mph with the wind behind her and down hill ,thank you for the suggestion and what year transit for the engine do you suggest (1990) or later regards JIM.

the heater is telling me that it was originally petrol, I will have a look on the vin plates of our vans (one factory diesel and some factory petrols) and see what the engine codes are. If it's a conversion, nobody bothers changing the whole heater.

Black smoke is usually a sign of over fueling

I would say so, or some servicing/repair. What make of pump is it? On the Di Lycas ones have CAV on the top, Bosch are round on top.

Do you mean phase1? Our factory diesel phase2 has 3 controls.

I don't think it's any of these Iv'e tried to take photos but with out taking the front of the Hymer off you can't get in I have photos of Bosch and other but they don't match ,did ford do a pump.
regards JIM.PS Iv'e don about 1500 miles in her and the blue smoking is getting better but the black when toeing up hills is still bad.

right you are, I didn't know that, never having seen a diesel phase1.

is there a diesel Mk1 heater? I would think not if there wasn't one in the early Mk2s.
