Towing questions

Postby NogE » Sat Dec 11, 2021 7:24 pm

So .....I've been thinking about towing my mk3cortina to the odd show next year....using the 1700 mk1 ..can people give me ideas of my limits..can I use a flatbed,or Yframe...is it possible using Yframe?....would I just use to much fuel,..the curb weight in 1000kg plus the flatbed would be at least 400kg I would say...
The towbar on the transit seems high ish..
Possibly to high for y frame to be used...yr thoughts please

Was looking at Yframes...I'd need to know the laws regarding using one....if I remember you hv to hv breaking link to the car beinging towed and it has tobe insured and moted....is there limits on towing distance?....
Recon y frame is the way..but is it the safest..

Yes...but there are three classics and only two drivers...for a couple of the shows I'd like to show all three

Towing the Cortina using a Y frame converts the Cortina into a trailer and therefore the same rules apply. Up to 750kg does not require the trailer (ie Cortina) to be braked but since it is 1000kg then the Cortina brakes need to be activated when the towing vehicle activates it's own brakes.

The alternative is to use a light trailer, but then you need to check the Gross Train Weight which should be on the Chassis Plate. This is the actual weight of the loaded towing vehicle including driver plus the loaded weight of the trailer. One version of the operators handbook did include a table of Gross Train Weights which KenB kindly included in one of his posts.
