mk2 transit single wheel to twin wheel conversion

Postby mk2 transit crew » Sat Feb 19, 2022 9:22 pm

Hi All,

i have always wondered if it was possible to make a single rear wheel transit a twin? i have never seen any old transits close up to see what the differences are between models etc.

i have seen on eBay the twin rear wheel mk2 crew cab. (mine being a presumably short wheel base single wheel)

what is actually involved in converting a single to a rear? is it actually possible? from what i can see on photos it appears the chassis is the same size etc just the damper mounting is inside the chassis frame not outside. i actually have cut off the damper mounts to get to some rust so can actually mount them inside if necessary. if this is the only difference i would probably convert mine.

does anyone know if a conversion is as simple as changing the damper mountings or is there more to it?

thankyou

No not without major body work the chassis rails are nearer together at the rear to make clearance for the inner wheels. The long wheel base single wheel van could be done as the one we had at work had modified wheel inner arches that could be cutout and the twin wheel ones welded in .

Hi Dumper thankyou for your reply. do you know whether the vans literally have the same chassis/frame to the flatbeds for example? just longer and shorter with more cross members etc. The one on eBay i mentioned looks almost identical to mine, so hard to tell if it has deeper chassis rails but width looking at the groves in the rear of the cab look almost identical.
