Ignition timing slipped

Postby Ellwood » Thu Mar 03, 2022 6:36 pm

I found a weird fault today. Last week my mk1 essex started, but was running as rough as a dog. After a fair bit of faultfinding i found two faults.
The rotor arm resistor had burnt out.
Also whatever powers the distributor rotor must have slipped 180 degrees. Simple fix was to swap over the plug leads to opposite sides of where they sat before.
I experienced this same problem 40 years ago on a TR7. Cant understand how it happens.... Maybe a poltergeist???

I know the coil polarity can become reversed ..don't suppose that could have anything to do with it .

Presume you changed the rotor arm after you found the faulty resistor. But did you find it to be 180 deg out before or after you changed the rotor arm ?

Just wondering if the locating lug on the new rotor arm was in the opposite orientation to the original.

I will check out that rotor.. Praps the replacement had the locator pin in wrong side.
Last time years ago i pulled out the dizzy, the hexy rod dropped down into the sump... Nightmare to get it out.
