type 9 gearbox

Postby MeelisV » Sun Oct 09, 2022 8:53 pm

my goal is use type 9 gearbox on the old van (not transit)
and with no transit engine
i have engine, suitable bellhousing, clutch and 5 speed type 9 gearbox (sierra)
but problem is that gearstick output is far too behind and i need to work out how to move that more forward

first idea was to cut and weld but that is lot of work and only 7..8 cm / ~3 inch difference - in the picture the middle version
next thought was use another gearbox tail section like in that picture that would help me too its around 25 cm / 10 inch

last i found that in transit they used type 9 gearboxes where gear stick is on top of gearbox are this MK2 ?
so is this gear selector part on market and can it be attached on sierra type 9 box
or is whole transit type 9 gearbox (5 speed) something that i can find on the market (last gear ratio ~0.8)

more good thoughts ?
anyway where i live there is limited sources and i have to find my parts from Uk or Germany or ...

Maybe wrong but I’ve never seen a mk1or2 with a five speed box only overdrive the first transit with a 5 speed a early mk 3 I know they was a bit weak till replace with the MT 75 box .

As Dumper said they were fitted to mk3 transits and I'm pretty sure the selector top bolts on so should swap onto another type 9

So I understand that type 9 in transit is mk3 not mk2
If moderator reads that please move it to mk3 thread if needed

Next I get that gear selector can be attached from van box to car box ? 5 speed ?

What you think how easy is to find van type gear selector
Or whole gearbox 5 speed ?

Or its better and easyer go to another tail where gearstick is just after box and beginning of tail section ?

I think you have got to look at everything and see what is available could you go for a mt75 there will be more of them still about.

Ok. My plan is to change engine and gearbox on Bedford CF van
I want to go with more modern engine then original. Around 100 kw. Gearbox must be manual and with last gear ratio around 0.8
There is room issue so all engines dont fit.
My plan is use vw 1.9tdi engine because its narrow.
I have bellhousing between vw engine and ford type 9 gearbox and I have sierra type 9 box.

Now there is small issue with stick.
Yes i can sell the box and bellhousing but what else I can use with vw 1.9tdi engine ?

I’ve no recommendations you may have to keep looking for transit type 9 or the conversion plate.

Is it a bellhousing or adaptor plate?

i had a mk 1 with a type 9 box in, used the type 9 so the floor hole stayed the same

You probably know this but there was a 5 speed gearbox fitted to later CFs. It was a ZF box and very good. But very hard to find now and expensive.

For the transit type 9 which has the side change, it was originally fitted to Mk3s but is a popular change for Mk1 and Mk2s. Best bet is to look for a complete box. They are still around although you will probably need to change the input shaft as there were at least 3 different lengths of input shaft for the type 9.

The other thing is that it is best to avoid using a type 9 with a diesel engine. These boxes rely on higher revs for lubrication. There are modifications that people do to improve the lubrication but it is still a weakness with a diesel. For a diesel, the MT 75 is a better gearbox.

You might talk to BGH Geartech in UK as they have been building type 9s for years.

Yes, but I try to avoid old gm engine.

Yes input shaft different lenght is known
