MK2 engine swap

Postby Knulen » Sun Feb 05, 2023 1:29 pm

I have found a Ford Transit MK2 (1980) which I'm thinking of buying. It has a 2.0 OHC 87HP engine, I guess this is the original engine. I would like to have a diesel in this car. What is the best/modern engine that will fit this car plug&play or without huge modifications? And which cars have these engines?

The easiest fit would be a 2.5di with a 4 speed box if you can find all the parts it’s really just a bolt in job not sure if the mk5 banana manifold will clear the bonnet someone on here must have fitted one at sometime and will know if it will clear or fitted a early inlet manifold.
You can fit a 5 speed but it will need some bodywork modifications if you can find a 4 speed overdrive box with propshaft and crossmember gear-lever with the switch and wiring the mk2 I fitted one in had a plug in the loom to connect it too.

I think there is a post on here of someone fitting a Nisan engine in a mk1.

a PD would fit nicely :D i've got one in my firevan and pete has one coupled to an MT75 in his mk5 viewtopic.php?f=27&t=173867&start=225

does involve a fair bit of work but its a better engine than a 2.5Di

Which cars have these 2.5di engines? Only the transit? And which generations of cars, you mention MK5. So do all transit diesel engines up to 2000 (and further?) fit?

Does Nissan also have these 2.5di (banana?) engine? Or an easy fit engine

I love those VW engines, however, I want to keep it simple at first for this car.
Do you have a topic about this engine in your car?

Is there a topic about what to check when buying a MK2? Is saw this forum: viewforum.php?f=16 However I can't search on MK2 so I can't find a good guide on what to look out for when buying a MK2. I guess there are a lot of places where rust can occur or some other problematic issues or expensive parts.

I only know of the di in transits from late mk2 up to mk5 all are the same basic engine all would fit the only thing I’m not sure of is if the mk5 banana manifold will clear the mk 2 bonnet. I think it was also used in a leyland Sherpa and it was also used as an industrial engine in generators.
Back in the day I did replace a York with a early mk3 di in a mk 2 I know I changed the water pump to one that you could fit the viscous fan on to it as the engine that I got had it on the idler pulley and I used the viscous fan off the York engine as they had different hand threads also I can’t remember what I used for the exhaust as the di had a bigger exhaust bore .

Yes the passage of time makes it difficult to get good second hand parts .
