Mk1 cologne do the dashboard bulbs control the headlights?

1970 Cologne mk1 1.5 v4

I couldn’t see the indicator light (green) or highbeam (blue) except when very dark, so I changed the bulbs in the dash to LEDs. I also changed the bulbs for lighting the speedometer to LEDs, one was working and the other was burnt out. I kept the oil and battery bulbs, as they were visible with the old bulbs. Now I can see the light from all indicators and I can see the speedo in tunnels, but the headlights and dash are acting weird!
- the headlights do not come on until after a while, but if I turn on the indicator they come on right away (edit: only when indicating left)
- the full beams do not work in the on position, only when flashing (including the dashboard bulb). They might work after a while, I forgot to check
- the turn signals work in both directions, front and back, but the dashboard bulb only flashes when indicating left

It could be that the handle is broken, but all this started when I changed the bulbs.

Everyting used to work, I have owned this van for 7 years and it would have failed the mandatory bi-yearly inspection if this did not work

Sounds like an earth problem on your binnacle.
Some of the dasboard lamps dont use an earth as the attached item provides the earth (eg oil switch switches the earth). But others do.
When filament lamps are fitted the current can pass through either direction and end up with two lamps in series. A low intensity glow of both.
After fitting LEDs the current can only pass in one direction so if a poor earth no lamp at all.
Only a guess tho.
