Mk2 Steering Box

Postby Major_Tom » Thu Jun 13, 2024 6:28 pm

..greetings all.

My steering box has more play than a primary school playground at playtime. I am totally unfamilar with steering boxes, never seen one before ever! I heard there is an adjustment screw on it somewhere, can somebody point me in the direction of where? Also if it's worn out, where's a good place that reconditions them?

It's a 1983 model if that makes any difference.

Cheers!

If you look on the side of the box opposite the droparm side looking from the engine side there’s a probably 19 mil nut with a flathead screwdriver slot in it undo the nut and screw it in clockwise just don’t over do it and end up with a tight spot when turning the wheel.

Thanks, top man! I think I know have the nut you mean, I noticed it was loose when I pulled over to see why there was play, but not knowing anything about steering boxes I just screwed it up and limped home. Will have a look and see tomorrow and take some pictures too!

Thanks for the advice, tightened it up and it seems to be loads better, barely any play at all now. Got a few other bits to sort, then it should be moving again and I'll see if there's any tightness that you warned me about.

If you feel it been tight just back it off in small amounts it’s best doing it with the wheels off the ground on axle stands I always greased the kingpins at the same time.
