Mk2 rear wheel bearing - Axle type 34

Postby tsurfer » Sun Jan 26, 2025 9:03 am

Hello everyone, I recently change the right side rear bearing of my transit MK2 single wheels with a SKF VKBA957 kit. This kit is listed as compatible with the transit MK3 but to me seems the same except for the axle nut. The bearing has this sizes Ø= 85,0 x 45,0mm, thickness 23,0 mm.
I've a doubt regarding if it's been mounted in the correct way. The problem (if it is) is that I see a small gap between wheel hub and axle shaft when is mounted. There is not this gap in the other side where the bearing as not been replaced.

The question is if is normal this gap with new parts such as new bearing and gaskets or could be a problem related to the wrong bearing thickness.
The new bearing is spinning freely with no noise and there are not oil leaks from the gaskets

It depends on the year of your MK2 Transit, the MK3 bearing is only compatable with post 1982 MK2 as the axle changed then.

What differences would there be in bearings for mk2 and mk3? Wasn't the type 34 axle fitted to both models?

Yes type 34 was fitted to MK1, MK2 & MK3 but there was an update in 1982 where the casing & hubs changed. The hub bearings & pinion seals changed.
