2.0l 16v DOHC into pinto Mk2

Postby mike c » Thu Jan 10, 2008 8:12 pm

ive been wanting to swap the engine in my tranny for a while, better mpg and an injection setup for a nicer lpg conversion is what i'm mainly looking for.

i can't find any EFi pintos and im not willing to pay the premium they seem to command - especially as they are all so old engine now.

i've found a scorpio with a 80kmiles 2.0 16v engine in it advertised for £500, im tempted to buy it and transfer the engine and injection system into the van.

does this engine bolt upto a type 9 gearbox with pinto bell housing? (i know 175Nm is probably near the limit of the type 9 but i have overdrive and a brand spankin new box sat here)

what engine mounts would i need? will it bolt upto the pinto mounts?

is the exhaust a custom job?

Is there anything else hard? i've done carb -> injection engine swaps before so fuel pumps and wiring looms arent a problem

Am i mad?

Thanks for any help

well this engine was fitted to transits 95-00 in 8v form so all the bits are available - problem is they are rare :(

the dohc transit uses a MT75 box that is unique to that engine - but same again rare :(

personally i'd love to see it done it would be a great project and the 1st one i know of 8)

i'll post any more info i can think of when i get home as ive done a bit of reaserch cos i was going to put one of these engines in mine but i went for the V6 cossy instead :D

one thing you wont need is a transit dohc radiator - as you would in a mk3/4/5 because in the mk2 you have space to fit the larger granada radiator :D

it would bolt up - might need a bit of work on the clutch release arm as the dohc flywheel is thicker but if you really wanted it would go on :D but personally i'd source an MT75 worth it in the long run :D

it wont bolt up to the pinto mounts exactly but its not far off so either custom make them, adapt the pinto ones (not as difficult as it sounds) or get transit dohc ones - if you did you would need the bit that bolts to the chassis rail too, it wouldnt bolt up to yours but it will fit against the chassis rail and you could weld it on :D

i'd imagaine so as the transit 8v dohc probly has a different manifold :? and even the full mk5 system would need a bit of work to fit the mk2

nope completely normal  - and once done you'd have a superb van 8)

at the end of the day it'd be cheaper to EFI the pinto

Theres no such thing as a budget engine conversion

i know waht you mean mate - but the efi pintos go for daft money over here :( probly cos the fit so well into the mk1/2 escorts etc. and the dohc in one of those is a bit harder job :)

just thought of one more thing you'd need to do is alter the tank for the injection set up - could be as simple as a swirl pot and low pressure pump feeding it :D

thankyou for the replies, after lots of consideration ive decided to leave it for a while. its winter for starters and ive got lots of other stuff i should be doin!

im gonna just lpg it as it is for now and wait till summer, i am still tempted by a v6, i had a straight six bmw e30 for a short while and i really loved the purrr - and i could just about put up with the consumption on lpg i reckon lol

thanks again
