hub seal and diff oil seal.


easy to do or need special tools etc??

also need new brake shoes, but cant find any at moment any ideas????

my local motor factors stocks the mk1 shoes - i think there same as mk2!!

If your mark 1's are the same as the Australian ones then its not so easy to replace that. You will have to remove the whole rear hub assembly. This means that you first take the axle out, then undo the large retaining nut (special tool preferable) which holds the bearings in place. once the wheel bearings are removed the entire hub assembly and brake drum come off in your hands to reveal the seal.

Its not a quick job, espially the first time.

sounds like that according to the haynes manual stooy, so i do need the tool then, bugger,

Mate I would recommend you do this as soon as, we had an axle seal going on the way back from Milan (so couldn't got it fixed), by the time the van was back the hub was stuffed! Luckily the whole axle is Mk3, so the bits are easier to get and a Mk3 hub replaced it. Might have been a different story with a Mk1 or 2

Ive never changed a hub seal - but i pulled the half shaft out of my mk1 last week! came out no probs didnt even need the slide hammer (but you might) looks like there is an o ring and gasket seal - both looked fairly easy to change - no specialist tools reqd, but like i say i didnt change them i just took the half shaft out and put it back in again!!

If you have a leaking rear on a Mk1 (mine is a 115 Bus i am not sure if yours is the same rear end) you are oiling your brakes. When i had my roadworthey done the idiot mechanic promiced me he wouldnt take a rear hub off and then did any way without my knowladge. The inspection slot in the backing plate and $1000 in reciepts is not good enough for some people.

I got in there 5,000k's later when diff oil started running from the bottom of the brake drum to find the bearings hadn't been adjusted, the lock tab was bent down and the hub had been replaced by force thus damaging the seal.

When you put the hub back on make sure you support it, i found this best done with my knees, and align it as best you can before pushing it home. Because if you just sit it there and push you will kill your new seal.

I had my old brake shoes relined.

Wolfie, i can photograph the bearing tool which my uncle made for our van if you need me to. It is baiscally a piece of flat steel bent into a U shape with a brace welded in the middle of the U then a large bolt has been drilled through the middle and welded in place.
