vacuum pump

Postby nardu » Mon Mar 10, 2008 3:31 pm

Hi. Anybody ever dismantled a Vacuum pump. It is not part of the alternator but a seperate unit below the alternator. By the way the engione is a 2.5 di fitted on a Mk2 (1986) with four speed gearbox and overdrive. I have a vacuum indicator bulb in the dashboard which lately was taking longer to switch off. The brake pedal is taknig longer to become softer and lately if I'm on idle speed it lights up again. Have dismantled it and found some oil passages blocked. When dismantled two of the inner blades wheren't coming out. Trying to find a replacement but it seems very difficult. Please don't tell me to fit one of the later ones (attached to the alternator) as in my case the lubrication comes from the crankcase and the only pipe out of the pump is to the servo unit.

Thanks. Nardu :(

The later ones have the same principle, with engine oil lubricating the pump, but as you know it has a pipe for oil (doing this from memory). As the blocks are basically the same, would it be possible to convert to the alternator with the vac pump on the back? BTW your engine sounds more like a Your, though i believe there is an 'inbetween' engine commonly called the York.5, though I am not too sure if it's just another type of York. In 86 (when the Di came out), the lucas pumped engines still had the pump on the back of the alternator. Up to december last year we had an early Di in the Mk2 luton. Other than that, can you get your vac pump reconned, or as an exchange part? The exchange might be a bit difficult though if you have taken it apart.

Nardu I think your engine is a 2.4 di , is it with a bosch injection pump?
Bdw can't you find a pump with the alternator (as on 86 di) and fit the oil pipes connections ?
I dont think its a bad idea.

Don't think they did a 2.4 di.

If Im not mistaken its the first model of di after the york and it is 2360cc. Apparently it resables very well the york and , its basicaly a york with major changes in the head. Always if Im not mistaken!

Went to the ford dealer in Malta and he checked on his computer. He confirmed it is a di, one of the earliest but definitely a di. Can't tell you the exact cc but if I'll ever have to take it out for a set of rings or rebore I'll measure and post again. By the way changed all the 'o' rings, oil seal, gave it a quick clean and refitted it. Had two leaks but after the third consecutive try it is working fine. Thanks every body for the help. Really appreciate it.
