Cheers for the tech tips Gunslinger

I thought about relocating the axle, problem being with that is the axle tubes on the 9" are quite large and woud require resetting the springs to get 3/4 bump travel

Option 2 changing shackle length, I dont know if theres any shorter off the shelf items that i can bolt in, i cant cut/weld them as its illegal to cut/weld suspension components in Aus
Another problem is pinion angle, if i raise the rear of the spring the pinion will point to the ground, theres a good and a bad with this the good being it aids in traction under hard acceleration the bad being it kill unis

I think the go would be new or reset springs im going to call K-mac suspension today and see what they recomend, they done some suspension components for transits like sway bars etc

There is other more safer ways to carry a big load without using raising blocks
My van has had an extra thick bottom leaf added to cope with a heavy load
you can fit poly air springs on the existing leafs
or you can add a universal aider spring like i have done to our falcon
none of these methods raise the hight they just stop the springs from compressing

Its alot of work, but:

Doing away with the leaf springs, then making a set of axle locating rods (4 link, like the mk1/mk2 rally escorts used) then, use coil over dampers to allow you set the height.

This way, you can still use the van for what ever you fancy, low for looks, or wind them up, its a back to a load lugger! :D

Was also looking at doing this
Was thinking about making a subframe that bolts to the front spring mounts that the 4 link can mount to

the subframe idea seems ideal! the only other thing I can think of, where the coilovers bolt to the van, it would need to be reinforced.

On a slight change of topic, after talking to mate, we have come with a plan for a 4x4 transit, without it being 22 foot in the air! :P and without using county/landrover parts.

If it works, it will be another way of putting IFS on to the vans!

Four link rear axle.

Postby Terry » Mon Dec 05, 2005 9:33 pm

I suspect you are not going to get away with a 4 link rear axle you are going to need a Panhard rod,\especially if you use rubbers for mounting the links..... you need one even if you are using Rose joints.
Why dont you use the forward half of the existing spring & shackle,
with a coil-over for height adjustment then you will only need to fabricate
a Panhard rod and a pair of anti-tramp bars.
I got a little black book with me poems in

the xr4ti sounds like it has the USA spec pinto fitted, they used the 2.3 litre pinto in low spec mustangs and suchlike. we never had the pinto in this displacement in the uk

Do anyone know if the lowering(heightening) blocks on the Transit are the same as Escorts from the same era?

I did think about this year’s ago when breaking a transit but never got round to it now I can’t remember exactly but I think the escort multi leaf springs used the centre bolt that held it together and the single leaf just had a bolt in the centre to locate it and the transit block was located by a dimple on the bottom of the block to hold it on the axle and a recess on the top for the dimple on the bottom of the spring to set into the block so it depends on if the dimple and the hole are the same size.
The transit block was about a inch thick so would only lower it a inch usually you would use two inch blocks I ended up making my own the ones you could buy where made of alloy but I made mine out of some steel we had at work it was the same width as the spring and 4 inches long and 2 inches deep so lowered it 2 inches all I did was to drill a hole in the centre the same diameter as the spring bolt and then counter bore the top of the block a inch and a half deep to clear the bolt on the spring and use a Allen cap head bolt and nut in it to locate it on the axle .

Great reply. I’m thinking of raising it you see. So a reverse Escort-lowering so to speak :)

Never lifted one it’s always been lowering for me if I was going to raise it I’d probably fit heavier springs a common mod back then was a Jack up kit using a set of longer swinging shackles but that was something I wasn’t keen on
