Just fitted a 2.5d, having a few problems!

I've just swapped out the 2.4 Yorkie engine with a 4 speed box from my Mk2 & replaced it with a 2.5d (not the banana maniflold version) with a 5 speed box.

I purchased the 2.5 when it was already out of the van, and as it differs from my 2.4 considerably, I'm a bit stick on what goes where! I tried to start it today for the 1st time, and it didn't go as well as planned. I've had petrol motors all my life, so I'm a little bit in the dark with regards diesels & how to trouble shoot . But my 1st question of many is:

Does the 2.5d have 2 fuel inlets? If so (& I think it does), does it make any difference which hose from the tank goes where? I found the fuel pump, and assume I stick my hose on the top section. Is that right? If I disconnect the bottom one, diesel should squirt through?



If there are 2 fuel inputs, is the 2nd one on the connection above the cylinder thing on the far left facing the firewall?

Only 1 fuel line upto engine,from tank upto lift pump outside connection,then it goes across back of engine upto filter head,thru into fuel pump.
The going into rear of pump (next to stop solenoid) in picture is fuel into pump.(the "U" shaped one)

If u disconnect inner pipe at Lift pump & crank it you should get fuel thru up from tank.

Alternatively,if you look closely at your 2nd picture,very bottom centre you can just see a jubilee/hose clip,the small bolt to the left of that into top of pump is a bleed screw,open this & crank it over.

Following the advise, I had a play.

The uplift pump on the left of the engine works as it should & pushes diesel up through to the fuel pump. I filled up the fuel filter with diesel & pumped fuel through the pump until it spurted out the bleed hole. It makes it way to the injectors & I removed the plug on the last injector and it spurted out there quite happily. I know I need to bleed the system completely so is there anything else that I need to do & how do I know when it's been bleed sufficiently?

After doing the above it still didn't start.

At the moment, my 'stop' solenoid isn't connected (my last engine had a different system as it was a previous petrol conversion & I stopped the engine through a cable system (long story). If the stop solenoid remains disconnected, is it permantently on 'stop the engine', or does it need a positive charge before the solenoid physically stops the engine?

Basically, do I need to do anything to the solenoid for the engine to start or is there more bleeding to be done?

The stop solenoid needs a live feed to open it to allow fuel through if disconnected it is closed off.

Stop solenoid needs 12v + feed to lift plunger & allow fuel into pump.
Find a 12v ignition switched feed underbonnet & connect it up(earths thru solenoid via pump then engine)
Sounds like you`ve got it bled up fully,should fire up at that.
If not loosen injector pipe unions at injectors,get someone to crank engine & tighten pipes when fuel starts spurting out of `em.
