Hello
I'm the very proud owner of a beautiful mk1 transit 150 LWB 15 seat minibus, currently running one of the first 2.5DI's from a 1986 mk2. The conversion was done really well by the previous owner but the lump is now on its last legs and the 4 speed box has always left a bit to be desired (like one more gear). I want to source an engine and 'box that are gonna improve performance without too much modification. will a turbo'd version slot in and can i get a 5 speed in without cutting the tunnel or slot? i have found an overdrive unit from a petrol mk2 but the guy wants £250 quid for the thing and it'll still need the first motion shaft changing with i think is a bit beyond my abilities. Any help will be most appreciated, cheers

2.5 di and a type 9 5 speed box easy option

The OD would be your best option for no mods (as long as it has the right bell housing), though it is a bit steep! The type9 was not a good box in transits, the best one is the MT75, but to fit that you would need to cut a new hole for the gear lever.
What's up with your current engine? You might find fitting a 5 speed or OD will cheer it up a lot. Got any pics of your van? Instruction on how to post them are at the top of each gallery.

cheers for the advice guys, I think the big end has gone but it's not been mic'd up and properly diagnosed, the oil light has come on too and i'm planning a run from Norwich to Wales so for peace of mind i'm gonna swap it. i'll probably keep the engine and strip it to see what condition it's in, i might get away with regrinding the crank and a new set of rings, but who knows. i offered the guy 150 for the OD box and he just laughed at me to i guess i'll be cruising at 50 gettin overtaken buy hgv's and coach parties... thanks again i'm pleased i found this forum, i've been a technophobe for too long.

Are you sure it's not an early DI? If so, the type9 is the easiest to fit, but it's not a very reliable box on the transit.

york and di have the same bellhousing configurations in fact ford know the york and the di as the york there roughly the same, they just made it direct injection , the pushrods and rocker shaft from a york WILL fit a di, i know ive done it

most people end up with a type 9 thats been ragged about for 20 years a good type 9 e g reconditioned will be as good as anything else

Well I wouldn't go for the type9 but tom tom did say what would fit with the least mods, and just giving the other options in case he had a change of plan.

i'm keeping the engine (it was just a knackered alternator bearing and a perished hose) and i've managed to get the OD box for £150 (though no money has changed yet). however, the box came off a pinto so needs the bellhousing and first motion shaft from my existing box, the question is will i need to modify/change the prop shaft? again thanks for the help. i'll post pics as soon as i figure out photobucket, cheers tt

I think you may have to shorten the prop, as the OD unit it at the back of the box.
