Hello All,

I have recently done some work to the engine of my Camper, a 2.0 Pinto OHC.
The head was cracked, replaced it with a revisited head with a new camshaft and new levers.
Also a new and more powerful dynamo was fitted.

So far so good, now the problem is in the current carb. I think it has seen better days and was wondering if replacing it with a new Weber 34 ICH ( As recommended on oldcars.de or in several post on this forum) is as easy as suggested?

The "issue" :
The engine is running smoothly when idling. But when you throttle up the engine seems to be "hesitating" let alone trying to get in 1st gear and trying to drive away. Timing is OK, valve clearances are OK (according to the guys that had a look at the cylinder head).
Engine stalls when engaging 1st.

Any Ideas?

Is it an auto or manual choke?

Auto choke. I think it is the "FoCoMo" one, not the VV.

Does it still do it when the engine is warm? Sounds like the auto choke breaking up,

Yes, it does still happen when the the engine is warm.

i know its just had engine work done, but when was the last time you give it a service,
points / condenser / plugs / ht leads / air filter / distributer cap / rotor arm.

if this dont fix it, take off the air filter housing, start the engine, rev it up from under the bonnet twice to about 5000 not constant rev's just up then down.

then on the 3rd time cover the carburetta air hole up with your hand, stopping air from comming in.

this creates a vacume, that sucks all the crap and dirt out from all the jets and imultion tubes.

if after doing this twice, it dont improve and you have serviced the electric's then it could be worn jets, but with not having the engine in front of me, it would be hard to tell for sure.

just had another thought, you said in your post that you havnt used this van for a while, petrol goes bad after a while, it could be crap petrol.

another thing, if it's idling well and reving well, but not pulling through the gears, then it sounds like fuel starvation problems.

replace all fuel filters, if you have one of those inline plastic filters, throw it away and fit new.

turn the engine over with the key, disconect the fuel line going into the carb, and check you are getting inuff fuel from the fuel pump, it could be a worn pump.

I had the same problem on my webers with auto choke, It`s easy. Fill the webers with some nasty heavy duty carb cleaner. and my auto choke and weber was up and running again....

Plugs / ht leads / air filter / distributer cap / rotor arm -> Replaced them too,
Points / condenser -> Will replace them as soon as the parts arrive.

Been tinkering this morning with the carb. Did what was advised, still no result.
I have to say the Choke valve lever and related look a bit shoddy, therefor I think the carb needs replacing.
Also if the engine does not return to normal idling level after pushing the throttle. You will have to "kick" the pedal to return to normal level of idling.
There is a little screw that should have some influence on the amount of petrol, according to the haynes manual.
But adjusting this has no noticable effect on the carb's operation.

The thing is, IF I change this FoMoCo Carb for a manual weber, is this a " bolt-on" solution or will it take me a lot of time to get this weber properly working?

the weber 34itch is the replacement carb for the ford one, so it should fit without to much problems,
if not can you get hold of a twin choke weber carb and manifold ie from a capri etc this will be a good way to go ,unless you are buying the 34itch new,as you will need some of the addaptors that come with the fitting kit! :wink:

Looks like a pretty comprehensive kit, maybe an adapter for the air cleaner, you will know that better when you try the air cleaner on it.
