Greetings all

Postby panda007 » Fri Oct 17, 2008 3:15 pm

Hey there, I am a proud semi new owner of an ex-Australia Post red 1985 mk2 transit.

Picked it up pretty cheap and let me tell you she was a mongrel... but with a bit of TLC she was soon running and purring as should be expected.

Have visited these forums a few times, and I love what some of you guys have done with these vans!!!

I currently have the 2.0 engine (same as cortina I believe) so obviously its an inline 4.

Hopefully the engine will be changed someday soon, but for now im just fixing her up cosmetically.

Ill try and hotlink you to some pics of when I first picked her up, and nah she wasnt running at all, the fuel lines were all corroded and leaking severely, but got her home after about 30 minutes of tinkering.

front end
Not even user friendly wheel pattern
Rear end
Dead horses have been in here...literally
I just remembered how to post pictures in this bbcode (im pretty rusty) so here we go

these have been replaced with Nissan 300zx seats, ill post a few pics when I have time to take some more

sigh

All I can say to this is lol.....

Image

This is just plain sad.....

Image

This doesnt look quite so good any more... haha nah shes mostly chrome now

Image

After a very mild cleanup in the engine bay, I can see im in trouble....

Now as you will all be able to see, this thing was a god damn pig..... Engine bay has been dressed up with a bit of chrome, and ridiculous amounts of time have been spent tinkering with this original 2.0 l engine.

Its showing 60,000 kms which I am told is original, and after taking off the rocker cover and playing around a little, it seems to be the truth.

I have a two sided sunroof which is going into her some time in the next few weeks, and I have already done a few minor cosmetic alterations, nothing too drastic but atleast now shes driveable.

When I was driving home it was getting dark and I realised I didnt have any headlights... the indicators didnt work, and it was running on 2 cylinders...... if I was lucky to have that many lol...... she was just an old girl that needed some love....

Anyways, now there is no dramas whatsoever in pulling 140 in third gear (yeah she is an auto) although shes a bit loud and starts to really chew through the juice.... Im looking at doing a 4 speed manual conversion from a cortina, or maybe even a 5 speed if anyone has any recomendations? Orrrrrrrr even a 4 speed auto from something newer? maybe a falcon or fairlane? dunno.

Ooooooook thats about enough out of me for now, hi everyone, my name is Caleb, and I live in South Australia, I look forward to chatting to you all and showing you more and more updated photos as this old girl starts to evolve. Im looking into having the body prepped for a respray as of today, as well as having any dents pulled or fillled, and believe me there isnt any which are too serious.

I have a little rust in the wheel wells on the inside of the cab, but nothing a bit of chicken wire and metal filler wont fix ;) oh yeah and my trusty old grinder + some beer! :D

EDIT by the way, that stupid door lock on the back? I tried to find somewhere that would refit a new lockset (seems to be a common problem with these after reading these forums) and after 3 weeks of waiting for some bozo who didnt even fix it I just replaced it with a shedlock from bunnings.... cost me 24 dollars and it looks awesome!! its chrome, but that doesnt matter as those big bumpers will be chrome before long too.. by the way the windscreen was smashed too, but has now been replaced, although it DID leak through the seals afterwards when it rained, but I have given it a coating of silicone which hopefully has fixed that problem

Welcome! Cosmetics aside, she looks a solid enough beast. If you want to go manual, try another transit box, the cortina one will have the gearstick coming out in the wrong place. The best one is the transit MT75, you will need an adapter plate for it for the pinto, and the crossmember and propshaft. Not sure if you will need anything else though, as we have only converted from 4 speed. Also I don't know how common the bits will be over there, did you get many Mk5s?

lol I dont even know what a mk5 is!! haha im noobish when it comes to transits!! I did wanna get a bedford, purely for the fact that they already come with extra seats and usually a fat v8 under the bonnet but when I saw this transit I fell in love!!

yeah I was kinda thinking that with the cortina box... but im sure its do-able right?

If you are talking about a newer tranny when you say mk5 then yes, we get all models here, although the campers and busses are extremely rare.... in fact I have only seen one more van the same as mine around... and I mean ever! I mean I see others, but they have different tail lights etc.

By the way, it still had the original fuel filter which I quickly changed... the original one was holding about 5% fuel in it at any given time, and it had stalling problems, as soon as I changed it the fuel just runs through smooth as anything! and no more stalling, although occaisionally when it is cold... Im thinking of swapping the weber in there for a holey of some description... any ideas or feedback?

I would keep the webber, if it's not broke don't fix it! And yes, I meant the Mk5 transit, AKA the smiley transit. They have the MT75 5 speed, the cast ally gearbox.

As the SWB is a flat roof, you can fit an after market one, I think you will have to be careful of sealing the grooves though.

what does swb mean? I wanna fit it above the seats, as I have those backwards opeing windows, and we are coming into summer now....... and it gets mighty hot here in SA

My roof is most definately NOT flat, it has grooves running the length of the roof.

Short Wheel Base, I can tell from your headlining. Standard SWB have a flat roof but it's corrugated, the Long Wheel Base has a completely flat roof, but it's domed at the front, so you are limited with the sunroof, as it has to fit before the slope/dome and in front of the first roof rib.
