conversion question.

Postby steady72 » Sun Nov 02, 2008 1:48 pm

hello all.
As some of you know i just bought a mk5 ambulance.
and i have a mk2 lwb. my mk2 is a single rear wheel.
My question is this. how hard would it be to fit the running gear from the ambulance to the lwb mk2.
E.G twin wheel rear axle, front axle with power steering and the 100ps turbo engine?
Whats the down side to going to 6 stud wheels?

EDIT x forgot to say the ambulance has huge roll bars..now hard to fit to a mk 2?

is your mk2 5 stud :?: i always thought it was a 6 stud single :?

anyway front will be IFS - a fairly involved job viewtopic.php?f=13&t=65

biggest downside to going to 6 stud is the ratios arnt very good unless you are crrying a lot of weight :)

mk1 style rims from factory.its twin in the st johns ambulance has the same wheels.
Id just prefer to have the twin wheel for road holding?eg snow etc, or am i being backward?

mmm i supose i could just go for re drilled landrover wheels with wide tyres?

ah yes - i even commented on it
for twin wheels you'd also need the flared rear wheel arches :D

you wont be able to fit the front hubs onto your beam axle without serious work or ifs :)

for my mk1 twin wheeler van that im doing as a camper - i'm going the opposite way - converting twin to single, the reasons for doing so are - more space inside the van - i can get rid of the massive inner wheel arches and for a better cruising ratio diff - and with modern tyres you dont need 4 tyres on the back to get the load capacity :D
