2.0 ohc 205 block

Postby cyberchild » Thu Nov 06, 2008 1:21 am

I was throwing a mk3 86- pickup 2litre petrol engine away behind the house last year. I dug it up now and it looks exelent. I look at the engine block. 205 with big letters.....

do any one know exactly the difference between old transit and new 205 block`s.

i have seen many 205 blocks in rally cars, and cosworth builds.

i think something must be better than other transit 2ohc engines about, i have a old one in my camper that has run 220k.

i know the top is for unlead petrol. and the carbs is small, webers will do fine..
what is more difference ???

pistons/camshaft/block/bearings....

it has only run 51k since new in 1986, is that good???
im thinking of building one up with a doch top. for my transit camper.
the engine seems good.

The bosch elektro vacuum ignition stuff is different - for orginal inlet manifold.
a tiny bit one the generator, seems better with some more plastic covers.
different coil/engine mountings,
the bolts are not easy to open because of this weird star bolt head.
diffent gearbox,

more i dont know, please !!! educate me !!

aah, and i just found out that.

sierra 2000is from 1988+ and transit 1986+ with stamped 205 at the block

Used later cast connecting rods. big improvements.
has thicker sump rails.
much the same as early cosworth 205 block. besides the crankshaft++

Yes, the 205 is a better engine, if it's from a car it may be an unleaded head too.

Be carefull,im pretty sure ALL transit O.H.C petrols are low compression,
Years ago we fitted a High comp pinto (2L) from a capri, escort granny etc. into a mk3 tipper,
But on the transit carb & electronic ignition/advance scale it pinked no matter where timing was set & eventually died (melted a piston i.i.r.c)
I guess cam profiles different too ?

Why not mark? We've had a granny engine in the minibus for 2 years now, it is on it's last legs now but it's been fine up to now.... It depends what you want to do with the van.

set up properly a higher compression engine will be more powerful over the whole rev range, and more efficient.

there is absolutely no reason why a lc engine is better!

low compression is cool, right on with turbo... My plan is that, and a doch top...
as use in my mk2 camper.

The only reason for "LC transit engine being better" is that the Transit and p100 versions have the 1600 cam in them giving the power lower down in the rev range for people who can't be arsed changing gear. you can get a high torque cam for any pinto so that solves that one and Higher compression is allways better untill you get to the point of detonation on crap octane fuel which ain't an issue living in the UK now 2 stars gone.

Go Hc and later on get it a nice exhaust and cam when they fail and its win win on torque and economy and get rid of any ford produced carb if it has one!!

bin there done all that ,a hc might be ok for a swb panel van ,but for a big twin wheeler pulling a caravan it doesnt go very well attal!

i spent bucks on my pinto it wouldnt go attal, sold it to a guy who put it into
a capri and it pins him in the seat !

ok, but i have on hand some 2 litre ford mondeo zetec 16v engine on hand, is there more power in them?? anybody know anything about a zetec 2litre engine conversion on transit mk2 ???.

Because my 2lite pinto with webers goes like sh*t and sounds like a rallycar... a weird sight when you comes around corner in 50km/h and it sounds like 130km/h..... 5000rps and revving !!!! :D

I`m thinking about some nasty sidepipes to get some nive flow on my camper !!

well........ ive thought about fitting a zetec into a mk1 the reason i thought of it was because it is a short engine and i think would fit behind the flat front mk1 - so no problems in a mk2
engine mounts would have to be made or sierra cvh mounts adapted as the zetec and cvh are the same block
the thermostat water rail is on the back of the engine so that might cause problems with the bulkhead but the engine has been fitted in mk1/2 escorts a few hundred times so that could be overcome
the main problem i see is fitting it to a transit mt75 (which i'd want to do) use int the pinto adapter plate should get it mounted but the flywheel-starter position might need work, either fit the pinto transit flywheel (mabe redrill) or move the starter position :D

i might still have a go but i'm wondering if the engine charecteristca are suited to a big lwb transit like mine :?

Zetec is a totally different beast to the pinto though Mark.
