MT75 gearbox , little help please

I had bought a donor van together with an mt 75 box ,and Im going to change mine because I m suspecting that it have worn bearing because the van vibrates a lot when the 4th gear is selected...
Now before I took mine's out of the van I m servicing the other I have beacause it needs the front bearing since there's a little play in the shaft , but I want to ask if any one here have ever opened up a similar box? I have expiriance on the ordinary 4th geared boxes of the transit but never opened up one with fifth!
Anyone sugest the safest way how to open it up ?
I have already unbolted most of the bolts and removed the back flange which coneects to the prop , and have pulled it about half inch out with a puller but it seems to have stuck.
any sugestions?

have you undone the bolt round the input shaft :?: you need a special tool but i just cut a socket in half (cant remember the size about 50-60mm :? ) and welded a pipe in between :D

have unbolted the little one which serves as a lock and unbolted that strange nut with many groves as in the 2nd pic. Then are you saying to the other which covers the input shaft?

I think I have to refer to the big 1metre wrench that I have under the bench :lol: :lol:

yeah the 2nd pic the socket goes over the input shaft :D

Thanks alot luke :D :D I now have to make some tool for the removal and to push the two pieces togeter also.

Also anyone have fitted a hydraulic clutch to this type of box ? Is there some univerasal kit to fit or something? :idea:

All MT75`s have "play"/lift in the input shaft,it`s normal :!:

The front of the input shaft is supported in the spigot bearing in the end of the crankshaft......

If you do continue to strip the box,
remove the nosecone/clutch relase bearing guide sleeve,then the large circlip behind it :idea:

Remove the 3 allen key bungs (17mm i think ) then using a magnet remove the spring,plunger & ball bearing behind the bungs.
Then pull out the sleeves in same hole,usually come out with the magnet,if not shove a flat screwdriver into them then twist them out.

Very important,before splitting front & rear casings remove the FRONT 13mm bolt holding reverse idler gear shaft (its on the left side of the box,looking from the rear near back of casing,low down)

You may struggle to recon the gearbox without access to the special tools used by Ford dealers.......

Until now I have been stoped because I have to buy a cheap socket 46mm to cut it across in to two parts then weld the piece that goes into the nut to a pipe and the other part to the end of the pipe , so it would be like a very deep socket. Also for those alen key bolts that you mentioned I used a 17mm bolt welded a nut to its end and used an impact wrench to get them out but they are stuck very hard :? Would it be a safe idea to heat the aluminium casing to a mild temp so they would come lose?? :?: :idea:

Hi, I'm new to the forum as I've just bought a Mark 2, and want to change the gearbox to an MT75 and saw this thread, so hope you don't mind me jumping in.

In reply to your thought on heating the bolts, I would be very careful, the last time I needed to heat a bolt in an aluminium casing I used a paint stripping gun and went really slowly, but at least it was a warm job, I've never used a blow torch on aluminium as to be honest I'm too scared too.

On the subject of MT75s, mine is fitted with a 2.0 Pinto and the old 4 speed gearbox (Whinning in 4th) and I want to fit an MT75. Is it a straight swap from say a Sierra onto the Transit or do I need an adaptor plate?

depends where you want the stick - imo a transit box is a better conversion but if you have 2 seats as opposed to3 you can get away with a sierra box and no adapter plate :D

that might work if they are loose but you are making it difficult for yourself - just get a proper sized allen key for a few £££ (or whatever your currency is :lol: ) its worth it :D

Thanks for the info, I would like to keep the double seat. I take it that the standard Sierra gearbox lever would be hindered by the seat? If that is the case I'll go for one out an Early MK3 Transit. Does that mean I need an adaptor and if so where can I get one? I can rebuild engines and have a good knowledge of mechanics, but not sure on Gearbox swaps.

No its all right the bolt fits sweet and tightly its because they are very hard, thinking to use the 1" impact wrench :lol: :lol: btw my curency is Euro and its a bloody thing because I think I ve got many but in reality i will have nothing :? :o

Im not that expirianced but if you have the di engine it will be a straight fit just need the two supports from the mountings of the engine to suport the gearbox or elso you 'v got a chance to get the box cracked in the bottom of the bell house .. as this one im working on its got a 2" crack :?

Also I forgot :lol: I had to buy a 46mm socket to modify it but I finished late from University and found the shop closed :x :x Have to wait now.

Unlucky about missing the shop, hope you cach it tomorrow.

I've only just got the transit (Sunday Afternoon), it's a 3.5T fitted with a 2.0 Pinto so will have a look into the gearbox situation. I'm not sure how different the fittings are on the DI as I know where there is one just along the road from where I stay. But I'll do some digging, I'm not in any rush as the whole thing needs sorted out from sitting in a yard for 2 years. I know Pinto's inside out as I used to Rally a MK2 Escort fitted with one, although it did have a lot more power LOL

Good luck with the gearbox, I'll be intersted to read how you get on.
