Please help me identify the Transit eninge in my Land Rover

Postby bullstanky » Fri Nov 21, 2008 5:46 pm

About a year ago I purchased a Series III Land Rover off ebay. Much to my surprise, when I lifted the hood (bonnet), I saw a ford logo on the air filter housing. Someone on the web identified the engine as having come out of a transit. It's a 4 cylinder diesel with a minimec injection pump - on the air cleaner are the following numbers - VO65295 and 87VB9600AA - I don't see a serial number on the valve cover. It this enough to help identify the engine?

I need to figure out what oil filter to use, a replacement for the alternator (a Leece Neville Prestolite 66021636 70 amp) and get a better starter. When cold, the engine doesn't like to start, I drain the batteries, and end up going no where. I'd like to install a 120 amp alternator, two batteries, and a more powerful starter to help solve this issue.

Any suggestions for these parts or help identifying the engine model would be appreciated!

87vb means 1987 transit, but a minimec pump :? that was fitted to earlier york engines, does it have heater plugs :?:

It has heater plugs, but I was told they were retrofitted onto the engine, not stock. I'm thinking that it could be york with a newer air filter housing installed??

Thanks for the pix. No, it doesn't look like any of those - When facing the engine from the front, the minimec pump is on the left, and the head is on the right. The valve cover has a large breather at the front connected back to the intake like an egr system. The most unique feature is a black plastic cover over the timing chain. I'll post a pic later to see if anyone can identify it.

it is a york, the minimec pump gave that away, and your right about the later filter, its common practice :D you need to make sure the glow plug/plugs are working correctly and that you have a high amp battery with thick leads and a good starter and it should start :) the early yorks only had 1 glowplug, some people did drill and tap the inlet to stick more plugs in to help them start, best course of action is to find a nice 1989 ish DI and replace the york with it

Sounds just like my old transit york
I installed a truck battery in the end, that sorted it

anyway with glowplugs it must be a York.

Cheers,
Chris

well all the yorks i have owned i have had no problems with them starting , infact i went to one about 3 months ago and it had been standing for 2 years , put a battery on and give it a preheat and away it went! 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)
the erly yorks like geoff says were difrent story(1974to1978) with only 1 heater plug in the inlet manifold!
the york also had 2 pumps fitted the minimec and the bosch ,the bosch was better (less smoke) and towards the end of the york life the vans only came with 1 battery set up as that was plenty good enouph to get them started!
they were a fantastic engine if you looked after them! 8) 8)

Thanks gents! - I pulled the following number off the valve cover - 715F-6582 AAF - is this consistent with a york? If so, what year? Where does one find parts for a york engine across the pond in the US-any ideas? I already have a marine battery installed, and I'm probably going to add a second battery and a larger alternator. Where do I find a bosch pump and starter? Will a heated diesel filter help in lieu of adding more glow plugs?

I'd just replace the engine, but if I do that I'll likely go with a Mercedes 617, Land Rover 200TDI or Cummins 4BT, and at that point we're talking big money for the engine, the engine transplant, transmission and frame modifications. The little york, though loud, smelly and slow, runs fine (once started) and gets great fuel economy, so I'll keep it, if I can get it to start consistently.
