the best bet for a 2.8 would be a sierra bellhousing and a transit type 9 5 speed!!
the 2.8 was never fitted to a transit but they fitted the almost identical 2.9 using an adapterplate to an MT75 box but these are very rare and hard to get hold off!!! :(

Would that then also require a custom propshaft?

Which parts are you having trouble getting hold of?

I find them fairly easy, just need to know where to look.

3.0 parts are plentyfull, you just need to know where to look, try a capri forum or cortina one, seen at least 10 3.0's go on buysellcortina alone last year.
Keep an eye out for a scimitar, same engine and dirt cheep, sold 2 last year one for £300 with a 56,000 mile engine in it and one £100, just the engine and box 72,000 miles and sweet as a nut.
The essex box wont fit any other engine, the essex has a one off bellhousing bolt pattern.
If you fit a type 9 5 speed make sure it's a V6 one NOT the pinto 4 cyl one, they are different.

I'm having a dense moment, I have a pinto with adapter plate to a 4speed + o/d box.

Am I right in thinking it will bolt on to the back of an essex?

Also, can I get away with using the pinto's flywheel, clutch and starter?
Hopefully the spigot bearing I ordered from ford's will fit aswell.

pinto and essex are different bellhousing pattens but the 4speed + o/d box should fit with an essex bellhousing i think :?

I knew thats the case with the cars, I was told that the 'box will fit, because it has an adapter plate.

Surely ford wouldn't used an adapter if they had 2 different bell housings. :?

mk2 transit used an adapter plate to the gearbox - i think to allow a bigger flywheel - i cant think of any other reason! :?
i had a mk2 pinto engine/adapter plate and box and i thought it would adapt it to the same stud patten as a V6 essex (i knew it was different to a v6 cologne and Di) but when i got V4 bellhousing and tried it against it it was different :? V4 is same as V6 essex im pritty sure!! :D
