Replacing carb in mk1

Postby jariw » Sat Dec 27, 2008 8:09 pm

Hello,..

My name is Jari and i am living in the Netherlands. I' ve purchased a mk1 motorhome from 1975. great car with a little work. Some rust at a few parts..but those are treated and painted again. De front suspension were i think the original...real bad . Replaced it so that's als ok again, maybe the steering will be not so wigly as it was :)

In the front there is a 2.8 cologne v6 engine. It run's ...well lets say...it could be better. I don't have much experiance with this engine but a wasn't surprised by its bottom power.
I have replaced the distro..the spark plug wires..and will displace the carb with a Holley.
Now my question... the carb doesn't have a fuel return line. Can I use the stock mechanical fuel pump or must i replace it with a electrical?

By the way...because the suspension was so weak...it bumped the exhaust pipe's. It is more narrow now...this must cost a lot off power. I'de like to replace the whole system...but it is hard to find the right system (are there other system i can use on this mobile home??)

Greetings.

If this is a cologne 2.8 you will need exhausts for a much later van and probably have to chop them about to fit.

yes it is a cologne 2.8. It looks a litle bit like yours...only v6 and another color :).

So you say that a exhaust from a later van wil fit with a little work?

This will be pssible...but maybe it is more easy to get an almost fitting exhaust from say...a granada v6. I don't know how it wil fit and on which places it has to be converted.

Perhaps somebody already did this ??

The Mk1 was never delivered with the 2.8 V6, so the exhaust will be a custom-made one. This engine started life in a Granada or Sierra and therefor You'd best look at those cars for new down-pipes. The rest of the exhuast will have to be custom-made. The tank on the Mk1 does not have a return pipe. This can be fixed however when You drill a hole and solder a piece of pipe to the pick-up/sender unit. (In het Nederlands is makkelijker).

They should have compensated the suspension for the extra weight of the V6 with an extra leaf or heavy duty(coilover) shocks.

Thanks for the answers...

Maybe it wasn't delivered with a 2.8...but it is in mine :) . Maybe it was a 2.0 once...but now there is a 2.8 engine in..with a bull nose (dog nose...dieselschnautch whatever ). On it there was a carb with a return line connected to the tank. By replacing it with a Holley this returnline is not needed anymore...but, how wil the existing mechanical fuel pump react if the carb is full and blocks the line.

I have an electrical pump in my motorcycle wihc stops to pump when the carbs are full and the pressure is high enough to stop. But that is an electrical, how does it work when it is mechanical?

So what you are saying is that i wil have to look for a set for a Grenada and custom buld it. A well...it is only needed in the summer soo time enough ..

But if this car was never build with a 2.8...and is much heavier.. then indeed the front leaf wil be to weak. That explains the fact that it hit the downpipe. What to do? are there coilover shocks?
Another question is...what about the RDW (dutch political part which always ask money). And the car number. How can i check what the original engine was??

Greetz

The original engine will most likely have been a 1500 or 1700cc V4. It could have been equipped with a 2 liter V4 Essex, but that's not very likely. If it is registered as a V6 on Your registration(kentekenbewijs) then there is no problem. For the MOT(APK) it is not important because they will not check. Does it say 4 or 6 cylindres on your reg.? If it says 4 You can drive it and have it MOT'd(APK in Dutch) but the insurance might be void (ongeldig) when
You have a serious accident with the car.

When the float in the carb pushes the needle upwards when the float bowl is full, the entrance to the carb is shut off. The mechanical fuel pump automaticly adresses to this internaly and needs no return line.

Hmm.. i'll check my registration. I'am not sure what is says.
The previous owner did a lot on this car...but i am not sure if he replaced the engine (can't imagine that...seems a lot off work to me).

So the fuel return line is not needed for the fuel pump...great. It saves me money for bying a electrical pump.
