Essex engine numbers

Postby fearthecat » Sun Dec 28, 2008 7:34 pm

Dear Ford fans,

I have searched your forums and read the first few pages of threads, but I still need to ask you directly:

What numbering scheme was used on Essex engines fitted to Transits?

I have a 3-litre Essex V6 from a Capri, except that the only number that could be an engine number, is a different format to any Capri ones. The engine number begins with a T, and then has six numbers. Is this similar to the format used on Transit Essex's? Were the Transits of the time, using the same engine number format as other Fords (two letters for date code, and 5 for individual number) ?

If this turns out to be a Transit engine, is there any date / model information within the number?

I thank you for any information you can offer, even if it's "you're on the wrong track" - anything I can rule out is just as good. :)

It is definitely an Essex, and originally a 3.0 and now 3.1, but if it was always in a Capri, then it'd have an engine number like XX12345. Instead it has T208967.

I've posted this request for information amongst TVR owners/fans too, as a number of TVR's used the Essex- but as I'm not as intimately informed with other Fords as I am with Capris, and the Transit used this engine too, I wondered if it could have come from one. Just hoping someone here knows their engine number off-by-heart or doesnt have to go out in the cold to find it!

Didn't the Reliant Scimitars also use this engine, with overdrive :?:

Ford Transit 120 TDI EPIC Automatic. 0-60 in a leisurely and smooth 12.7 seconds and 1/4 mile in 19.1 seconds. Now where's all these faster? manual Di s?

They did! Gotta love anything with 'overdrive'! I don't beleive the engine numbers correspond to Reliant Scimitars; however it is something I will look into further on Scimitar forums. Wikipedia has a list of vehicles that used the engine, hopefully I wont need to refer to it for more options.

i am shure the T would not mean transit , if so what would it say on the ford A series, but your number says capri ,
i think the capri would of had difrent cam ,but as far as i know the rest was the same apart from the transit heads!
