Pinion Oil Seal - £40! How Much?

Postby Southerner » Wed Feb 04, 2009 1:14 pm

I'm having problems sourcing a new pinion oil seal for my van. 1971 SWB (90) Diesel Mini-bus.
I took the diff down to the local Ford garage and asked them to replace it, I assured them that you could still get hold of a new seal (I think someone on here said they still made them). Apparently not the case. The garage gets a seal in but this doesn't fit. Apparently nobody round here seems to have the microfiche to get the part number, so I phoned up a parts place that I knew had the microfiche and got a part number - 1709-662. During which time my old seal has been removed and sent over to the local parts place to play snap with what stock they have left. Spent the day phoning round to find one myself and have been told: The axle is the Timken type, not English. These seals are no longer made. The only palce I have found one is through Bearingkits via a special order and this is going to cost me £40!

:? So my question's are:

1) Anyone know whether 1709-662 is the real part number (this may help)
2) What sort of axle I have - Timken or English? Didn;t the escorts have timkens?
3) Where I can get a seal for less than £40 - you can pick an english axle pinion oil seal up for £6

Any help greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Andy.

When fitting a different trumpet to a 3 rail gearbox (cortina) i found i needed a special seal due to differences in input shafts/trumpets, i just phoned my local bearing supplier and gave them the dimensions of what i wanted and they sent me one. We get all our hub oil seals from them too so they should be able to help. Pm me and i will give you there number.

Thanks guys - I'll get on to my garage again then - last time they were telling me there should be four more numbers to the part, if they can't help I'll give the parts people a bell direct, if that's no good I'll drop you a line Charlie. Cheers, Andy.

After all that they have found a part and will be fitting it today, I'll let you know how much it was etc when I pick it up. Cheers, Andy.

I'm after one of those as well.

1978 SWB single wheel axle.

It sounds like your axle will be the same as mine, so when you find the details, could you post them up here.

Thanks,

Chris

Where did you get the correct seal from?, does it give suitability for other Fords/any other models on the packaging?

Got it from Fords, FINIS code 1709 662. :D The bloke couldn't tell me whether they still made them but after all my panicking they dug one out no problem. No idea on what other models it would fit. Cheers, Andy.
