Fuel pump problem?

Postby gfdiamond » Tue Mar 03, 2009 12:58 pm

hi guys,

im trying to track down a power problem with my mark 1.

symptons.

1. sluggish take up - can only get to around 20 mph, after a while, even if accelerator flat to floor.

2. loud clicking noise if car is not moving - i.e. stuck in traffic.

3. truck wont start after running hot - have to complete a circuit with spanner inside
near fuel pump.

questions -

what is the best replacement fuel pump?

where can i get one?

i would appreciate any advice.

regards,

geoff.

I'm confused.
What do you do with the spanner near the fuel pump to get it going, what circuit are you completeing?
Also unless the pump is broken it isn't going to make loud clicking noises.
Did it have all these faults when you sent it to your mechanic?.
If your mechanic says the compressions are all at 130psi and yet the thing wont go above 20mph there is sometghing drastically wrong with it,you said in an earlier post it would do 60mph so whats happened to it in the meanwhile?.

hi bacons dozen,

the problem is with the clyndrical unit at the bottom right hand side looking down at the engine.

after the engine has been running for a while, it starts to make a loud clicking noise, followed by spluttering and the rapid dying of the engine completely.

the clicking noise seems to go away after the van is moving, but comes back when its sitting still in traffic, then the bad problems start.

trying to figure this out as i cant have the engine dying in london traffic.

also, very low power output the at moment. after clicking noise comes, the car wont start unless i complete a circuit between two bolts on right hand side above engine, then engine turns over and starts.

extremely frustrating.

geoff.

The only cylindrical thing low down on the right I can think of on a V4 is the starter motor.Like wise, the two bolts must be the solenoid.Flashing a spanner across them will start the engine with the ignition on.
I think you are trying to describe faulty wiring or a duff starter motor that seems to be reluctant to disengage or something.
You said you took this to a mechanic,if so it seems its come back with a serious fault.Take it back again, before it does the engine terminal damage.
If this is an automatic then shorting the solenoid out you have the possibility of starting it in gear and running yourself over or ramming someone up the chuffer.

hi guys,

looks like we have tracked down the problem.

it seems to be a faulty fuel pump, which explains the low power, clicking etc.

we are changing this over and hopefully this will change.

and yes, when i start it by completing the circuit across the selnoid i make sure its in the n mode.

geoff.

Hang about a minute,
what is the cylindrical thing?.Has someone fitted an electric pump?.If so and its clicking all the time you have a leak, you're out of petrol or the pumps defunct.
Why on earth are you shorting out the solenoid with a spanner ? Either the wiring to it,or the solenoid itself is buggered,in which case there's no point in mucking about with the starter.

hi guys,

yes ,the mechanic said it was definately a problem with the pump. the thing making the noise is a brown thing with a check pattern located on the right hand side looking down at the engine.

he also said he fitted a new solinoid and this seems to be faulty.

im hoping this can all be resolved so i can get more power from zero (better than 20 mph with the pedal flat to the floor) and a cruising speed of around 50 rather than 30 mph before it dies.

ill keep you posted.

ps. i moved into the van today, as im in between flats. its cool living in there in central london. all mod cons and no rent! especially like the hot inside shower! once i get the engine sorted ill be dangerous.

regards,

geoff.

Sounds as though someone has fitted an Electric pump & its maybe not pulling Fuel through the old bmc & mini pumps used to click when empty.
As far as the starter goes I would look at the solenoid first or switch to soleniod as the starter seems to work fine when you cross the solenoid.
Try & post a pic of said round thing Clicking could be anything without hearing it running there`s not much anyone on here can do to help :?

I know nothing, but going by your description it sounds like you might have a BEAVER living in your engine bay
i started with nothing, still have most of it left

Why did he fit a solenoid, what was wrong with the old one?
It sounds more like its wired up wrong if you have to short it out to start the engine.
I haven't a clue what the brown thing with a check pattern is maybe its Sherlock Holmes hat.Why can't you ask your mechanic what it is,or doesn't he know?
Is his name Wardy?.
