Mark 2 kingpin grease nipples not accepting grease.

Postby Rolo » Fri Mar 17, 2006 6:00 am

1982 Transit front axle (Mark 2) kingpin grease nipples on passenger side do not accept grease.

I had the same problem on the driver side bottom grease nipple but by removing the nipple and cleaning it properly that problem was solved; the same procedure doesn't fix anything in the top AND bottom grease nipples in the passenger side kingpin.

Can anybody share his experience with any similar problems he may have had and what the solution was?

I read somewhere that heating up the kingpin with a gas torch may cause it to accept grease but is that the proper thing to do?

Try jacking it and then try putting the grease in, if it still wont go get someone to wiggle the steering at the same time.

Trunnion is the parts that mount on the kingpin either side of the axle. By heating them you are melting the old grease that is in there making it easier to pump new grease in. Can you pump grease through the nipples with them removed?

MrMPuk:

I'll try those tricks after the weekend and I'll let you know what worked and I'm glad to hear there are still a few steps to take between this stage and having to recondition or replace the kingpin.

:D :D :D :D Thats the answer.....remove top n bottom caps from kingpin.........warm up with blow lamp catch the old grease has it drops out ,dont drip it on yourself or you will be running round the garden like a headless chicken............ take the caps off the goodside and put the cap on the non conforming side and apply your grease ,it will do the job,.....you can put new nipples on the caps and try putting grease thro while its off the motor.........or you could try a set of caps from the tatter yard........... i once had a mk 2 where some one had welded the cap on but that another story lol  ..................... :D :D :D :D :D best Billy

Puk and Bill:

TOTAL SUCCESS!

At first I tried just lifting the front axles (wheels removed) and moving the steering wheel lock to lock.

That was enough to get the grease through the top grease nipple but not through the bottom one so I used my LPG torch and applied a little bit of heat more or less directly on the grease nipple and that finished the job.

Thank you guys.
