Testing thermostats etc.

Postby baconsdozen » Mon Jun 08, 2009 11:25 am

With hot days coming cooling systems that just about struggled through the winter can let engines overheat.
A quick and easy test of the thermostat is to start the engine from cold and let it tick over, kkeping your hand on the thermostat cover. If it slowly gets warm the thermostat has stuck open,if it stays cool then suddenly gets hot thats means its working OK,but if the engine then goes on to overheat unless the thermostst is open partially opening (rare) there's a problem with the pump,a partial blockage or air lock somewhere in the system.

Sound advice - cheers Kevin :D

I will be keeping a very close eye indeed on my thermostat when the engine rebuild is complete

Maybe if its old thermostat, would be better to replace it on any sign of over heat.
