Drivable max speed?

Postby ullivilli » Tue Jun 30, 2009 8:16 am

I have a mk2 1980.
The stability is really low and the max speed is 70-80 kmh
the motor and the transfer has enough of resource to go faster but it gets unsteerable.
So what would be normal max speed drivable or is this normal
God will protect us, but to make sure, carry a heavy club.

sounds like your steering box needs adjustment - they should be ok faster than that :D

how much free play is there in the steering wheel before the wheels move :?:

and are the tyres ok - tracking etc :?:

Should be stable at at least 100kmh, mine is and it's a lump. It shrugs off crosswinds as it's so heavy low down. Must be summat wrong with yours.

Ah!! Mines is a bit wobbly in the steering too. its ok on the main roads once you learn the freeplay but on B-roads you have to stay away from verges or you have to constantly correct the steering.
I just thought it was a characteristic of the mk2 but I'm thinking I'm gona have to look into adjusting the steering box

Before I bought mine I test drove one which was a complete nightmare - more like sailing a boat! So there is a range of experiences but they don't have to be like that . . .

My MK1 CI motorhome is only affected by cross winds.

When there is no wind the steering is pretty direct with no wandering. I’ve got 4 new tyres, had the tracking checked and the 30k miles hasn’t caused the steering box to wear much.

A nice cruising speed seems to be about 50mph, but it can do 60mph on a straight road…not too good at taking corners at speed though ! ! !

when I was a mechanic one of the local people brought the keys for his mk1 v4 1700 camper in for an MOT.

without thinking we offered to pick it up and I drew the short straw to drive it the single mile back to the garage..

I have NEVER driven anything with such dire steering in my life, I kid you not there was almost half a turn if not more on the wheel before ANYTHING happened and the tracking was also way out so you can imagine me up the road at 20 mph wheel going like the clappers trying to get it right..

in the end we welded (sleeved as well) a mk2 box cut down onto his mk1 column as the box was so badly worn it was completely out of adjustment.

but the best thing was. . . . . "he was teaching his wife to drive in it ! ! she thought at first ALL cars were like that to steer and that she must simply be doing something wrong to wander all over the road" ! ! !

My 84 MK2 bus is solid as a rock up to 60MPH (flat out  ) Check all things to do with the front axle, bearings, shocks, king pins, track rod ends and drag link ends. Also check freeplay at the steering wheel 75mm at the edge of the wheel with the wheels straight ahead is the max!

since re-adjsting the timing on the later York in the m2 Ci motorhome she will pull 65mph no worries and even 70 occasionally when the going is flat. totally stable and comfortable at these speeds
